_E. F. Spence. . { i i 4 . ' . } ; j 5 ; _ For Recorder, . ‘Public Administrator, For District Attorney, Supt. of Schools, John: Caldwell, . M.S: Deal. _ For Supervisor, SE A Worp To Usion Mey.—The true patriot is often filled with fears as he looks into the future. Throughout this State work and eager for the contest. be roll is avoid the issue.” : 1 rhead standfet nen ard, urging them to nominate and enter the ’ . fight. In Tuolumne, Sonora, Mendocino, Mariposa, Sutter, Colusi, Tulare and Sierra counties, tickets are made or being made, and if Union men allow. themselves to be drawn from their party the State will be . cargied by copperheads. Their programme is to divide the North: and unite the South. They encourage these bolters because bolting is the best way to destroy the party of the Union. Here is an extract from the New York Day Book which shows the animus of copperheads: “We can yet, in the expressive oe of the day, ‘whip the fight,’ if we are only Tonath Clark.: disposed to try. We can get back the rights of the Southern States intact in a short time ifwe will, and then the Abolitionists are checkmated. Every man who talks of abandoning the coutest at this point, or leaving the rights of our fellow citizens at the South to the mercy of those abolition fools there a determination onthe part of and knaves who, would rob and plunder the unprincipled demagogues who came intothe Union party for the purpose of obtaining office, to tear the organization asunder because the people do not choose to perpetuate them in.office. The movement commenced in this county. Ih was organized by three or four unprincipled officehunters, some of whom de¢lared three years ago, when ‘they left the Detnocratic party, that they were going into the Union organization to rule it—men whose lives are made up of broken pledges, violated oaths, and Political trickery, who suppose themselves born for office and are determined to fulfil their destiny at the sacrifice of everything else These men led off in the bolt, and their example has encouraged men of their ~~». fitamp to pursue. a like. course in other coun-. ties. Their treason to principle and the Union party seems to be spreading as rapid~ ly as did the vile example of South Carolina years ago. Davis and his associates determined to rule or ruin the country, and these office-hunters are determined upon the same line of policy in this State. The principle which actuated the one is the moving power in the other. It is for the Union men of this county and State te determine whether the defeat of these party traitors shall be as signal as the defeat of the rebels whose course they are follewing. ‘There is, we fear, too much wacorcern among Union men in regard to these things. Many, very many of those who were ever ready to be foremost:in the contest when armed rebellion was seeking the destruction ofthe Goverament, seem to think that the military power of the South being destroyed, their work is ended. These men look upon the questioa of slaveryas dead with the Democratic party. They think that old issues were buried with the iaet sound of rebel guns, and they took with unconcern upon the attemptto organize ‘new parties by breaking the great. Union party into fragments.. But, the men who have watched _ the political horizon, look upon such, unconcera a8 au omen of) dangers: When the mighty armies of the nation’ stood a living wall between the nation and danger it mattered vot that copperheuds should organize their “Golden Circles,” and that the sympathisers with treagon should plot at midnight for the aid of treason, but the case is different now, The military is giving way to the civil powers and the duties which our brave soldiers so faithfully performed are now them as remorselessly asever Goth sacked a Roman town, does: not deserve the name them understand that weintend to have this Goverament restored 43 it was.” They intend to have this Government as it was, and the Union men in this county and every coutity in the State are placiig in the hands of the Democrats the power to make this Government what. it. was.. The Democratic party is organized and at work, and the man who talks af this time about disbanding or dividing the Union party is an enemy tothe country or an egregious ass,— What would be thought of a soldier who talked of disbanding an army in the face of a powerful. foe, and yet these bolters are attempting to pursuade Union men to do just that thing. The Union. men. will. net-be blinded to the truth. They intend to stand by the party until the last vestige of the rebellion is destroyed. The Union men of this county will rebuke the miserable parveuns who seek to dead them away from duty, and the bolter’s defeat will be signal and overwhelming. ty lt EASTERN Items—Jeff Davis will be tried by a Military Commission. Professor McCulloch who supplied the rebel authorities with meags for burning Northern. cities is in custody at Washington, Fletcher of Virginia, has been released on parole, subject to the order of the President. Henry “A. Wise wants to be pardoned. The President has refused to rescind the twenty thousand dollar exception of the. Amnesty. Proclamation and the work.of confiscation is proceeding at Richmond and other places. Offices for the sale ofthe public lands are to be “opened in the Southern States. Gen. Bickley; chief of the Knights of the Golden Circle, has issued, from Fort Warren. an address releasing the Knights from the obligations of their oaths and suspending thé work of the order until 1870, whenhe proposes that a Congress of Knights shall assemble at Washingten to lay the corner stone of the “Saxon University.” oe Tue PimaTe:;—Bby the arrival of a wha ing bark from the Arctic Ocean at San Francisco on Thursday, we have the report_of ton ‘vessels destroyed by the Shenandoah.— Eleven: vessels were captured, but one released. on giving bonds. ‘The Yeleased ves sel was compelled to bring the erews of the destroyed ships to. San Francisco. Capt. Wright, Merrill and MeRuer, and Charles falling upon the citizens. The real arbiter} Hare, allefSae-Francisco—cach lose vesof the vitdl questions which were evolved during the war, will be the ballot-box. Can the Union men of the State affurd to destroy the party until the patriot shall finish the glorious “work already ‘begun’ by our soldiere?,, Let every true man, desiring the welfare of the pation und the petpetuation ofthe glorious achievements of out atmies stand by the orgavization.
