LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.
Fire aNp Loss or Lire ar Rouen
AND REAbY.-—A fire originated in the
house of E. L. Melbourne, at Rough &
Ready, about sundown on Monday last.
The alarm was sounded and immediately a large number of men repaired
to the spot. The building being a
mete shell was soon ¢nveluped in flames .
and shortly the cries of @ child were
heard in the burning building, Several }
attempts were made 16. rescue it, bat
those who tried were driven back by
the flames. A little son of Melbourne’s,
aged four years, was butned with the
building, and after the fire his bedy
was recovered. The: mother was at
work at a neighboring house at the
time of the fire, and although several
men were in the house, the bay who
was sleeping was thought to be sate
until hig cries were heard ~ from ‘the
flames. The fire communicated with
the ‘store formerly ocelipied by ‘Col:
Wood, now only. used as a "sleeping
apartment ahd it ‘waa also consumed.
Fortunately ite a humber of men
happened to be in town, and by hard
work they succeeded in stopping the
progress of the flames. The shrabbery
in the yard and the shingles of -A.L.
Slack’s house were considerably scorchéd but it did not take fire. . There was
no insurance.upon the property. In
the evening a subscription paper was
circulated and im a short time $75 was
raised for Mr: Melboerne’s family, —
