AEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA, Mnesday, July 22d, 1879, fs 0 a After the County Central Committees of the .Workingmen and N. C. -).’s had agreed Saturday afternoon to hold their primaries as one ox@an-" ization, and have for their test for voturs a pledge to’ “support the momifees’of the Workingmen’s an@ New _ Constitution parties,” the follewing ~ MeCutchan, Chairman; Chas. Kent, i xecutive Committee were appointed by the join€ Coavention: RB. G. W.-D. Long, K, Casper, A. R. Lord, James-Kitts.__The-primaries—are. to be held on Wednesday, July 30th, aud the nominating Convention, Sat-". urday, August 2d. After the above coalition ha been made and clinchul, well-knewa members ‘of the Kearneyite Central Committee beasted on the streets atid elsewhere that . they had obtained the upper hand of the H. B.'s by avery large per centage. Said one of them to a disgust:d member of his party jyesterday: “We have nor sold out to#he Chronicle party. We decided in secret session that it would be advisable to pat them on the backs a little, if by doing it we could secure ‘theif votes. We will elect radical members to the Vounty Convention, and instruct them positively not to give the H. B.'s a_single office. The latter cannot scare up enough votes to run the Convention or elect its ‘nominees, and it would be impudent on their part to ask for any offices. We might as well keep them from working against us though, as long as it will not cost anything.” We have it-on very good authority that the New Constitution _ Central Committee were thoroughly surprised that the éther crowd even. permitted them te take any part, however insignificmt; and that they had fully intended, in case the Kearrieyites would-not recognize them, to take the snub ia good humor, and support whatever ticket Messrs. McCutchan, Gillet, Lord, Nihel, ét \ als, should'see fit to put in the field. The New Constitutionists must: find a deal of satisfaction in permitting tliemselves to be made the tools of the Workingmen’s party; for as.matters stan now they are really nothing more nor less. If they do not * see the point now, they will after the Convention of Augtist 2d has adjourned, or else the Workingmen of Nevada county have lostall the back bone they ever possessed. —___—-«> -Stalwart semocrats Disguated. The Grass Valley Uuion, one of the oldest and staunchest Democratic newspapers on the Coast, has this to say in its issue of Sunday: The Democratic State Central Committee yesterday decided to retain the nameof Hugh J. Glenn, at the head of the State ticket, notwithstanding he refuses to support the balance ef our nominees, That they could have reached this ¢onclusion after thepoaition Glena has taken toward Democratic organization is amazing, and the decision will be reevived with disgust and indignation theusands of Democrats whe have ways stood true to the party. “This is the result of the miserable trading aud traflicing spirit. that actuated a latge portion of the late Svate Convention who. seemed more anxious to secure Office than they were to maintain ptine#pié. This decision will carry demoralization throughout the rauks, asthe party is placed in the position uf being the mere tender of the sanction called the Honorable Bilks, which is the ineubation of the San Francisco Chronicle, and worn out political hacks of both the Demovratic and ublican parties. The _ rank ‘and file of the Democratic party are under no obligation ¢e endorse the action of the State Central, Committee, and are now free to vote as theyplease—a privilege they will exercise in the most inde t mann and in a,way that will learn the incom t Jeaders of the party a lesThe Democrats of Nevada county will spew Glenn out of their mouths. In Nevada City the leading Democrats, to the number of some twenty or thirty, have since receiving information of Glenn’s being retained by the Ceutral Committee openly expressed their determination to vote for Perkins. Judging from what can be learned of the feeling in ‘other townships, it is certain that the fight so far as Nevada county.is concerned will be between Perkins and White. Por Comnty Treasurer. It is beliewédethat-A. R. Lord will he the most candidate, -before the Kearneyite-H. B. Conven: tion for nominee a8 County Treasurer, 9 ILY TRANSCRIPT ‘. 6vening ‘on the 9th of Nov., 1877. The Fight Goes Bravely On. There was great demantl ‘for the Weekly Argonaut ‘hete ‘Saturday on ‘the ‘part of the people to see what Pixley’s reply to Gorham's “charge ‘would be, The great majotity of those who ha¥e that it has an uncertain ring which speaks but poorly for Pixley’s confidence in his ability to ‘wash away the stain that Gorham has cast on his reputation. individuals, the editor of the Argonaut treats his subject so tamely as to indicate that he feels himself in a weak position. Hall Saturday evening, fulfilled his threats in regard to posting Pixley’s Lalleged crime by giving utterance to the following : On the 14th of July, 1877, an infamous andwillful libel. appeared against the Hon.-A. A. Sargent, then a U.S. Senator, in the Aryonaut, a weekly paper pwblished by Pixley and others. I hotd in my hand the original manuscript of that article in Pixley’s own handwriting. After demurrer, motion to strike out portions of the complaint and other expedients for delay, Frank M. Pixley, on the 9th day of —Noy., -1877,--filed-a sworn answer to Mr. Sargent’s complaint for libel, In that answer he swore positively as follows: . he deferidant, Frank M. Pixley, for his separate complaint of plaintiff filed herein ; 1. Denies thathe, the said defenitlant, sompored wrote or published, or’caused to be composed, written or published, the certain matters set forth in said complaint as having been published in that certain newspaper, the Argonaut, therei mentioned or any part thereof. This bold, willful and -iatentional lie was signed and solemnly sworn to by Pixley before L, D.-Craig, a Notary Public, who certifies to that fact The copy of the docament which I have . certified as correct by Thos. H. Reynolds, Clerk, by J. D. Ruggles, Dep; uty Clerk, July 9th, of this year,.-— The power of money over Pixley cannot be estimated. It was to escape, if possible, a judgment, against him to the enemy of mankind and _ his body to the Turnkey of the Penitentiary of the State, But not only has he done this; he has also since sought ‘to get permission to.speak with Mr, ‘Sargent, doubtless hoping to get rid of this libel suit ; and only within the past. two months, being’about to make a sea voyage on the same st 1amer with that gentleman, he besuught ‘an interview which was declined, — Mr. Sargent would -holil no inter. course with the'libeller aud perjurer. It is probably because of such refusal that this tarantala of the press seeks to sting the man he has libeled, by the wicked falsehood that a recent severe but temporary illness “froin malaria, from which he has long since entirely recovered, had been a brain «lisease. Mr, Sargent lives a prosrous gentleman, while Pixley sinks into the bottemless pit of infamy. Edward Colenian fer Senator. The Republicans of Nevada county are unanimous in their desire that Edward Coleman of Grass Valley shall be their candidate for Senator this Fall. It is understeod that he does not-desire to accept the nomina. tion on the grounds that: business interests require his-undivided personal attention. It is to be hoped that Mr. Coleman will not persist in standing out of the fight on these grounds, . There is but: little doubt that his nomination would be ‘equivalent to an election by an overwhelining majority. Fhe voters of ‘the county, recognizing through a long acquaintance his sterling good qualities of heal and heart, prominent qualifications as a successful business man and straight-lined fealty’ to principles of justice, will rally to his support not alone from the party to which he’ belongs, but from the other organizations as well. The Supervisers’ Treat. @ Board of Supervisors will probably have returned from their official trip to the upper part of the county to inspect the old Donner Lake road by the time this paper reaches our readers, As an indication that they are putting in their odd minutes to a yood ailvantage, they sent down some tine trout to ‘TRANSCRIPT was remembered by. the nimrods. Among the number of aspirants, you-did me the honor of announcing that I am . a candidate for District Attorney, as a Republican, I feel very grateful to my friends for the consideration . shown me by them, in announcing my name in connection with the responsible and honorable office of District Attorney; more especially grate. ful, as my name was thus announced without my consent or knowledge. —~ I should be indeed much gratified to be pleced on the Republican ticket . of this county as a candidate ; for a nomination at the hands of that party in State and county is, in my opinion, equivalent to an election. — Nevertheless shall have to respectfully decline the canditlacy for ~the position named, and will ask that you please publish this declination, James A.
