Sears’ Reconpo.—We have heretofore
avoided any allusion to the editor of the
Gazette in consequence of bis sickness. He
has, we understand, again ‘‘mounted the
tripod,” and as he appears a “searcher of
“records,” we propose to give his an airing.
‘Sears has a political record of which any
man might be proud. A year ago he furiously declaimed ‘against any .body “who
“would divide the Union party. He is now
a leader of disosganizers and the editor of
their paper. “During the primary contest
_he got a friend to go with fim and introduce .
“him as « candidate for the State Senate.—
‘ Next he published a card, stating that he
was not and never had been a candidate for
that offices but would support Belden. He
acca ‘went inte Convention, helped
‘to nominate a candidate against Belden,
and ienow. supporting that candidate. He
teok.ean oath at the primaries to support the
can@iddtes “nominated -by the: Union Con-vetitien'to which delegates were being elec“tel. To that Convention, when bulf the
ticket had been nominated, including Senator 644 "Raseriblyaien, he said in a speech
‘that’ te'was going to support the ticket.—
‘Many ofthe nominations were made unani“mous, aad several of the candidates, ii¢ludsing Senator and Assemblymen, were nomiwaited by acclamation, Sears and his friends
being delegates and acquiescing, Next he
/mbolters’ call and engineered a bol‘tera’ Goovention. We say nothing of the
motives which induced him tv ceise char. acterising the peculiar aud exclusive supporters of Juhn Conness as “the d--d Conneds cliqie” ahd throw himself into their
atme. We pass by his altempt to inaugurate a bloody riot in the streets of this city
on thé diy Uf the .primary election, and say
nothing of his friends and himself arranging
to bring lvads of Democrats from Grass
Valley tewnship to vote at the ptimary in
__Aeie city. Such little eso»pades are so much
“ia harmony with other acts that they need
no cial.mention. His present positivn
cute hin aff frour the great'Unioa party of
‘the. State and Nation and» he occupies ho
enviable position tn politics.

we propose to review the charges of the}
Gazette. 1st, in relation to the report to
to the State Superintendent. At the time a
defense was madein reghyd to this matter,
Tin’ which it was” shown ‘we were without,
récords. We are charged with “making no
financial report whatever ”’ This was utterly, impossible without “data, and that there .
was none we can‘prove by the members of
the Board of Supervisors, before whom t
. books were taken, and.alse by Wm. H.
Crawford, County Treasurer. The Gazette
alluded to the charge of Swett, last winter,
and we took the trouble to show the books
and papers to Mr. Beggs, t then editor of that
paper, and he then published our defense,
making tlie: following editorial remarks :—
“We give place in another column to the
defense of M. 8. Deal Esq , County Superintendent of Schvols, aguinst the strictures
of the State Superintendent. On yesterday
Mr. Deal gave us further verbul explananations of the causes of his delay in making his statistical report, and his failure to
make a financial teport. It. appears ‘that
the Trustees of several districts in the county fuiled to have the school census taken
at the proper time, and’ the Superintendent
was obliged to have-@ special census taken
\in those districts/and he delayed-his statistical report no longer than, was absolutely
necessary to receive the returns. He had
no adequate data upon which to basea financial report, and therefore made none. He
explained these. circumstances to, the State
Superintendent by letter. . The Jatter, however, seems tu have overlooked all explunations, if he received them: in time for his
annual report.” Tee
Such were thé ‘comments of the Gazette,
after ite editor was fully advised in the premises. Two years age five’ Districts in the
county were deprived of the schoul fund in
consequence of the neglect of Trustees to report.” Under the present administration not
a single child has been deprived of .its proportion of the fuod. If the Trustees through.
out the State were held strictly to the let.
ter of the/law, the school fund. would be of
no earthly benefit to nearly half the State.
The fact that the State Superintendent gave
every District in the county its apportiunmeut is evidence that he considered the delay excusable, We bold'that it is the duty
of the Superintendent to look to the interests of the schools of his county, and it is
better that ‘his ‘reports should ‘be delayed,.
and every district be provided for, than that.
one-third of the children should luse the
fund. Acting fe this belief we delayed,
our re gens % enough to secure ‘thet
desired end. Our enemies are weleome to
make the most of the matter. We are‘conscious of having acted for the good of the:
