SLUICE-ROBBERS. A Lively Pistol Fight With Three of Them. Last Sunday night. about ten o’clock infcrmation was received in town that a gang of sluicerobbers were cleaning up at the Nivens & Co. drift gravel claim near the Selby Flat schoolhouse on the Blue Tent road. An officer and three citizens armed themselves with pistols and a shotgun and hastened to the mine, arriving there about an hour before -midnight. As they reached the edge of the cut below the mouth of the tunnel they saw three men at work there washing out the gold. The officer occupied a position nearest the lower entrance to the cut, and as the robbers detected two of the citizens swoeping down upon them one of them started—to run. The officer fired justin front of him to check his pace, and the thief sprang back behind a big bowlder for protection. The other robbers then started to run, despite the command to surrender that was shouted at them, whereupon two or three shots were fired at them from the .parties above: ‘Don’t shoot any more, boys,’ called the officer to his companions, thinking the sluice cleaners one of the latter commenced shooting back, and then a lively fusilade was inaugurated on both sides. About fourteen shots were exchanged, but nobody was hurt as far as can be ascertained. The robbers made a break down the cut and escaped into the. woods. Two of them passed within a few feet of the officer who stood there with drawn pistol, but he thought the runners were of his own party and neglected to fire. The moon did not give much light and the officer could not see who the thieves-were. They—_leit behind a shovel, crowbar, horns and other implements, besides a large quantity of rich black sand that they had cleaned up. All of these effects were brought to town, but there is nothing about them by which. their owners can be identified. The robbing of the sluices of this mine is believed to have been going on at-intervals for two or three years past, although Sunday night is the first time that any one has been seen in the act. They Did Not Stay. Five Nevada City gentlemen went down to Glenbrook Park Sunday to witness a base. ball game that was advextised to take place between the ous True Blue and the Athletic)clubs of Grass Valley in connection with of sheep killing and horse-shoeing. There were present beside them sixty or so Grass Valley men and boys who acted as a sort of a committee of the whole in trying to atfour bits apiece tickets that would entitle the latter to loaf around there. After mature consideration the quintette concluded that they could have more fun on their native heath with the capital that it would take to stay there, and’so with a touching au revoir to the sixty ticket sellers they retired from the festive scene. They went down on the train, but as there was no train coming back ‘when they were ready tothey took
advantage of the opportunity to ascertain how many railroad ties there are between Glenbrook and Nevada City. Geo. F. Jacobs, Ed. Brown, M. T. Lawrence, John Eagan and Con. Show people who come this way with meritorious entertainmeénts have always given Nevada City audiences the reputation of being among the most appreciative and enthusiastic that they encounter any where. The demonstrations of approval are encouraging to the performers when not carried to excess, but for some time past certain boys who delight ‘in’ stage _ representations have been carrying the thing a little too far, and by expressing their satisfaction through whistling and cat-calls have caused much annoyance -to the actors and split the earsof ladies who chanced to be present. The racket was especially offensive on the first night of the Morrison Company’s engagement last week, and so before the performance bégan on the second evening Marshal’ Holbrook made a polite speech to-the disturbing element, asking them to be less riotous in their applause. He gave them to understand that any disregard of the rules of propriety in this~ respect would hereafter be followed by the offenders being ejected from the Theatre. His lecture had the desired effect, and every; body wasso well pleased with the change that the rules laid down by the management tor that occasion will at all times hereafter be strictly enforced. The New Reservoir and Pipe Line The Union says: Work onthe reservoir of the Grass Valley Water Company is progressing very favorably, and with about ten days more of fair weather that part of the Company’s work will be completed. About 50 men and 20 or 30 teams are busily at work; and no time is being lost to finish -the-extensive-work,-— is very favorable to fast: work, but’ everything is being done to make the reservoir a substantial one. The work of digging the ditch and laying the pipe to the Empire mine is also being pushed as fast as possible, and it will not be long before the machinery of the Empire will be driven by water power, with a great saving over steam. Altogether about 100 men are now employed by the Company. Ee Mrs. Mary Harris, wife of Judge Harris of Modoc county, publishes a letter to vindicate her husband from the worst charges against him.
