July 28, 1876. The Difference. =e The Grass Valley Uaion says the Hamburg affair was most outrageous. It says it has no words to express its detestation of the outrage. That is fair and right. We can not agree with the Union however whengit says the people of either party off South Carolina are no more to bé. held accountablefor that affairthan are the people of California—for the Trvat Creek case near Truckee, white men went to a house occupied by Chinamen, set it on fire and shit the occupants when they _attemtped . to escape. I al tle similar outrages which have been perpetrated in the South for the past ten years it has not been hard to guess what the politics of the parties were. We presuiue. no Nortbern man countenances such murd -Tss, and it is équally certsin that no Republican, either) North or South, ‘has ever been guilty) of such atrocities. A party huving an element liable at any time to break out in such: little freaks,is certaitily one not to be trusted with power, while the lives and liberty of another class of citizens there, are at stake. <iceirmperk Gideon i Correspondence. Jim. Beddington, the foreman, is decreasing the pile of pipe-clay in the Boston claims, but there is an enormous quantity of this to be wasbed off before the gold can be got. In the course.of a few months this mine will be cleared, when’ the number of hands will be increased. It is metioned merely as a bald, upvarnished fact, for at present the Professor's people are nndecided whéther-to view ; his actions in an augelic or a. demoniac light. The reader can judge. which would be the more just: Quite recen'ly, tue reverend gentleman went out for a ride, taking with him bis wife and his father-in-law’s horse; or, to. speak more correctly, the horse took the Professor and his wife. The duty which de¥olved on the animal was a very unpleasant one. . The Professor bad thoron bly fast driving, nnd when — be retarned to the stable his respected parentsin-law, whd happened to bé drawn upinaline of, battle at the door, scarcely recognizedin the-trenibli ng, fodining bespecked steed the spitited animal which bad prainced out iin ali the pride of his eqnine vizor a few . honors before. Afterwards he had tired bis tervous arw’ in tryivg to impress the wearied animal with a proper sevse of hiduty’ aS afast trotter. Therefore, secu; larly speaking, the Professor, was iv a ‘devil of a temper.’’ Unfortunately, ‘his respected parents-in-law were not aware of the fact. The ‘told man’’ undertook to deliver a lecture on the beinousness of cruelty to dumb asimals, whereupon the Professor gut oat and clabbed bis horse. The old gentleman, nothing davuted, eutered on the second chapter of bis homily, aud’ was expatiating-onthe amenities of Re ministeria! profession, when the Professor's . club caught him on the jaw, and, dramatically speaking—tubl an and curtain,. Of éourse, the actions of the reverend gentleman are to be investigated. Every one who doesany thing meritorious nowadays is bonered thas. however. A legal bitch occurs, itis nwcoastitution»l to trya mau fortwo offenses at once, and the Trustees are ia doubt whethber-to ceusure the Professor for cruelty to the horse-or-to bis father-in-law first. The best way out of the difficulty would be to ignore both charges and like conduct in not having clubbed bis respected mother-in-law when a gollen opportunity occasred.—San Francisco Post. fore -Epwm Bootu and wife, accompanied by J, H. New York until they reach Frisco, Arrangements huve . been made so that they. will stop off each night, lay over in the city they happen-to be at, and start fresh the nex morning. The same Pullman cars used by Dom Pedro has been secured, and Booth and suite will travel in regal style. McCullongh proposes joining the party at Omaba and traveling back to the Pacific slope with them. Booth opens at the California iu September. Elephants as Raliread Travellers, When ub ut eighty miles out, oue corner of a bridge gave way, and five cars of tie thind section ran off the track, and turned over into thesecft maid. ~The first cur contained horses tue second an elk and a camel, the oher three the elepbauts. The swill avimals were eusily liberated, but the élepbauts were all in a beap. To remove them the top of the car ws cut away, nud then was exhibited the intellige:ce that marks these hilf haman brutes. ‘they obeyed every command of the keeper like children, crawling on their knees, turning on their sides, squirming like eels,+ taking more wonderful aud novel positions than aay deseribed on the stow bills, — After their release there was nut a scratch ou them, and no school boy ever gave more elephyntic expression of relief than did those five elephants. They trampted, swayed back and forth, and did all but talk. The remaining distance to the city was xeW . hever started op a march thunwere those animals. ‘Tue cool, . breezy a mosphere and the bright moonlight were all inspiring. As all the oridges were gone, at every stream the elephants took fresh enjoyment of their liberty, They arrived bere before the train.—Chicugo Journal.
