The Grass Valley Uaion says the
Hamburg affair was most outrageous.
It says it has no words to express its
detestation of the outrage. That is
fair and right. We can not agree
with the Union however whengit says
the people of either party off South
Carolina are no more to bé. held accountablefor that affairthan are the
people of California—for the Trvat
Creek case near Truckee,
white men went to a house occupied
by Chinamen, set it on fire and shit
the occupants when they _attemtped .
to escape. In the latter case it was
not an open daylight. transaction,
and headed by the best citizens of
the place. Aud three weeks did_not
elapse before avy effort was’ made
to ferret out the perpetrators.

of the Hamburg affair? I al tle
similar outrages which have been
perpetrated in the South for the
past ten years it has not been hard
to guess what the politics of the parties were. We presuiue. no Nortbern man countenances such murd -Tss,
and it is équally certsin that no Republican, either) North or South, ‘has
ever been guilty) of such atrocities.
A party huving an element liable at
any time to break out in such: little
freaks,is certaitily one not to be trusted with power, while the lives and
liberty of another class of citizens
there, are at stake.
