Several excellent mines are located here, _ and eopsiderable prospecting has been done . The camp 1s in a” flourtshing condition at presenf, mahy new lodging houses’ and cabins having been built during the past few months. The oldest company in the sicinity is the Forest Springs Mining Company. This company made a sale of one-of their ledges, the Norambagua,to Cronise & Co. , on Tuesday last for $100,000. The company still . Sewn the Lone Jack which. is a first rate . ‘Mr. Green. pastor. ‘ evening last: mine, and has been worked long enough to establish its richness beyond question. . The beat among the new ledges is the} “‘Goldeh. Rock,” owned. by Childers, Brogan, Watson & Co. This claim’ was locatéd in 1865, aud it has been werked steadily ever since October of that year. A tunnel of 400 feet-diag been run and the ledge was tapped on Wedneeday last. It is two feet wide and the rock shows free gold and rch sulphurets. More importance is attached to this ledge from the fact that it is on a direct line between the Ione and Norambagua. The croppings were richer than those of any ledge in the vietnity. THe Deav Woov.—The Dead Wood jedge is located on. Deer Creek, abore the Oriental mill. It was located some years ago and-worked;but~ did ‘not pay. The company now owning it, put up machinery and determined to go below the water level. They are now dowh between fifty and sixty feet below the surface, and aré taking vut reek which pays over sixty dollars to the tua. ‘They have had a crushing which yield. ed $78 tothe ton. The ledge is two feet wide-and—weltdetined. The owners have the ‘‘dead wood” ona fortune. THE, CounTy BoarD oF EXAMINATION. Hereafter no temporary certificates will be eranted by the County Superintendent of Public Schovls. All applicants for certificates must undergo the regular examination as required by the school law. All exautinations must be conducted in writing, and _wilk require an entire day. The county Board will meet once in three mouths. Seine PaRapDise LosT.—This evening the great moral panorama of Paradise Lost’ will be exhibited at the Theatre. This. painting’is one of the finest ever exhibited in the State and should be seen by all. This will be the only chance our citizens will have of seeing this magnificent painting. Horse Race.—We learn from the Grass Valley Union of yesterday, that a match race was made.ou Friday, in that place, for $1,000, a single dash of a mile, between the Bayes horee and a horse owned by Wm. Hobby. The race will come off over the Glenbrook Park on the 18th of Auguet.— _Half the amount of the stakes, $500, was put up on Friday, and the balance will be ' put upthe day of the race. Dunbar, an excellent teacher of penmanship, will organize a class at the High School, on Tuesday evening. At that time specimens will be exhibited, and the system of teaching explained.
