= Tho Horada Daily Trane. BROWN & CALKINS. TUESDAY, JULY 29, 1884. EE A GOOD PLATFORM. The following is the platform “adopted by the Republican State Convention. _. Résolved, That: the Republicans of the State of California, in Convention assembled, indorse and reaffirm the National platform of the Republican party, adopted at its Cunvention, recently held in Chicago, and ‘we congratulate the country upon the nomination of Blaine and Logan, ’ the true representatives of the Amerjean policy of progress and‘unity. Resolved, That we declare that the prosperity of lsbor-and_ the interest of capital require the maintenance by the National Governmeut of the American system of tariff for protection, Under thi: policy which has been constantly supported by the Republican party since its foundation, our varied industries have been fostered and extended, our laboring classes have enjoyed better wages than iu any other part of the world, and the whole country has achieved wnparalleled prosperity. We denounee the free trade policy ¢ which the Democratic party has advyocated since 1840 as. dangerous to the well-being of American labor. Wearraign the Democratic party of California for supporting the Na tional Democartic party, which stands upon a platform that declares, in effect, for the free-trade doctrine of tariff for revenue only, as admit. ted by prominent members of the eommittee that framed the plank. Weinsist that the success of the British policy would destroy the growing industrios of our commonwealth, especially the grape, rasin, wool and -manufacturing interests, and would reduce the wages of our workingmen to the starvation point, Resolved, That we ask and demand that the industry of the manufacture of the raisin shall be protected by a protective duty, and resolved that we demand the restoration the restoration of the tariff on wool as fixed by the law of 1867. : Resolved, That we are in favor of the adoption of the proposed amendment to Section 7 of Article 9 of the Constitution of this State, anthoriz ‘ing the furnishing of free text-books Ram mge inthe .comman eahnn Resolved, _That-the —Repuablicen party of California has a consistent record in its unswerving devotion to the interests of the people in oppo. : sition to all monopolies. First—We declare that ‘railroad corporations being organized for a public use, all “unjust discrimination as between persons and places is in direct violation of the Constitution of this State, ‘and should be prohibited. Second —We declare that the charges for freight by all transportation companies should only be what the service isreasonably worth. Third—Itis the duty of the Railroad ,Commission to regulate freights and fares justly in the interest of the people. We call attention to the section of the platform of the National Republican party which favors Congressional legislation to carry out the constitutional power of Congress to “ regulate interstate commerce, and __ especially to the language declaring that ‘‘the principle of the public regulation of railroad corporations is a wiseand salutary one for the protection of all classes of the people, and we favor legislation that shall preventunjust discrimination and excessive charges for transportation, and that shall secure to the people} Mra Senna, and tothe railways alike fair aud . ” equal protection of the laws.” We We charge that the platform of the National Democratic party evades this great Wearraign the Democratic indorse this declaration. issue. party of California for supporting a candidate for President whose public record identifies him as a friend of monopoly and an enemy to the rights and the interests of the people. “We particularly denounce the doctrine advanced by the nominee of the Democratic party for President ia his yeto in the New York Legisla‘gure of the bill reducing fares on the Elevated Railroads, in which he declared that there was no constitutional power in: our Legislature to regulate and abridge privileges grant. @d by a former Legislature to a public agency. This extreme moncpothe higher Courts of the land, is ‘wrong and dangerous, and marke . . him as unfit to hold the high office of Chief Magistrate of the Republic, _. Resolved, That the Commissioner of Agriculture be constituted a Cabinet officer of the nation as and under the title of ‘Secretary of AgriReeolved, That, recognizing the claims of eur soldiers, and the eepec. obligations of California to those throngh whose faithful services our territory was'acquired; we favor the ion to all surviving “. iratite Reset Sel Selling Out! — ae Taam WOLF er P Guonip, You Bet J M Owens, Penryn 3 ; ® —— Selling Out !
