The following items are from the

A lot has been purchased for our
pranch jail, Those citizens that contributed tcward buying the Chinese
lots, some time ago, have each given
the . sum of twenty-five dollars to
make up the amount necessary for
purchase. The lot will be twentyfour feet front-and will be deeded to

The Indians about Truckee anticipate trouble with the Carson Indians on account of the murder the
other day. Itis said by them that
tbe Carson Indians are making preparations for a big fight with the
Truckees. :
Several days ago while persons
were engaged in cleaning a vault in
the rear of Sweeney Block, they
came upon a shot gun which is sup_ posed to be the one taken away from

the Grammar Schoel at that place.
‘Ladies have been nominated in oth.er counties, we know not why they
should not be in this.
The Grass Valley Union calls fer
the organization of a Hook and Ladder Company forthwith, in that
town. :
Joseph Perrin is favorably mentioned in conneetion with the nomination of Sheriff at the Republican
County Convention. One thing is
certain, no man would work harder
for the election of the ticket than
Mr. Perrin. He is popular everywhere. : :
Remember the races at Glenbrook
come off this afternoon. Earl Brown’s
and Palmer Smith’s horses will go
for $100 aside, best three in five,
and Bert Lancaster’s horse ‘‘Dan”
and West's horse, ‘‘Speelum,’’ will
compete for a $250 purse. Other
races are‘also expected to come off
at the same timé.

The Grass Valley Union said, after Swift’s speech in this city, the
Nevada [ce Company was alarmed
for fear the speaker had frozen the
audience so stiff, that there would
be no demand forice the rest of the

EvipEncEs of reform on the part vf -peliticians is multiplying on every hand. For
instance, way down in Jacksonville, Florida, an ex-Governor announces his intention of starting a monthly magazine.
i
Don’t ADVERTISE.—Here is a good thing
on advertising from a Colorado paper: We
wouldn’t advise anybody to :dvertise any
more than we would advise a teamster to
grease his axles. Axle grease costs money
and if you can’t go a ‘‘kitin’’ with a heavy
load, why, you. can travel along anyway,
and save money forthe grease. If your
thimbles wear out sooner, what of that,
haven’t you saved the money that other
teamsters have squandered for grease? It
is just so with advertising—it don’t pay
any more than it does to grease your wagon
when you are about to draw heavy loads.
