“NEVADA: CITY, CAL.
LOCAL AFFAIRS.
-Long Span.
The V Flume Company have had
4 great many obstacles to overcome
in the construction of their flume.
They are now making 4 trestle work
actoss the ravine near the Pittsburg
mine that.is over eight hundred feet
long, and in the centre, seventy-five
feet high. It reqnires a good déal of
lumber, to build such a flume. At
regular ‘rates the lumber alone used in
its whole censtruction would bring
$40,000. There is nomore heavy work
to be done after this trestlé is completed. The company have leased
ground for a yard near*the Tell
“They have-obtained the
lease for twenty—years. The yard
will extend back a distance of half a
mile-on the tine-of the ttome whic
will.allow ‘ample reom for the storage of lumber and weod.~ The supply intended for Grass Valley and
this place will be delivered from
_there.until other arrangemeuts are
found necessary.
-_<-S
More Water Needed,
Grass Valley’ we should think
would require more water than the
‘city at present is supplied with. '
When the supply is. so limited that
it. has to be shat off during the night,
we should think that. itwas scarce
‘been completed to Town Talk Hill,
and a good supply of water, comes
downit, we should think arrangements would be made with the company to conduct it by way of Alta,
Hill, where there is a reservoif already to hold it, from which water
from the town could be had which
would supply the highest buildings
in town, and give 75 feet more 'presure than the present works. How‘ever, the matter is none of our business, so we will say no more aboutit.

The Concert and Pesiienis:
The ladies who are getting up the
concert and festival fur the benefit of
the Methodist Church, in this city,
are progressing finely, and. the pros.
pect is good for one of the best entertainments ever given in Nevada
‘City. The tickets are placed at 25
cents each, and a number of young
ladies are engaged in disposing of
them. Buya ticket and save two
drinks or a couple ef cigars.
»-Sargent will Speak.
Hon. A. A. Sargent will address
the people of Grass Valley on the}:
evening of August 6th, and this city
on the evening of the 7th. He has}
appointments in ether parts of the
State during the campaign. Mr. Sargent is an able speaker, and friend
-or foe will be interested in his
speech. Every Republican in this
vicinity should without fail be pres.
ent on that occasion.”

The Blind Troupe.
“The Pioneer Blind Troupe gave an
entertainment in this city on Tuesday evening, and delighted their audience. They will perform the rest
of the week at San Juan, North
Bloomfield and Moore’s Flat, and
we advise our readers there to go
_and listen to them, and enjoy a qniat
_evening’s entertainment,
Personal,
W. D. Long, who has been on a
business trip to the Bay, returned on
Wednesday evening. Elbridge Devis, one of our typos, bas also re-.
turned frem a trip tothe same place,
where he saw the sisi in all his
splendor.
Commenced Werk.
J. G. O'Neill bas been employed
to teach the Columbia Hill school,
and we believe has commenced work.
The ‘people there have erected a new
school building, and Mr. O’Neill is
to make some of the furniture. He
-perhaps is engaged in that kind of
work instead of teaching. He is
master of either kind. (8
Still Scarce.
Notwithstanding Boardsof Examination quarterly grant ‘a host of certificates to teach, yet tedchers are
searce. It proves thatthe possession ef a certificate is not always regarded as evidence of fitness te teach.
A master of his professign will always have situations offered him,
while dozens of imcompet ents will be
idle. :
