THE DAILY TRANSCRIPT. NEVADA UITY, CAL. : SUNDAY, JULY 30. POETICAL BUT NOT TRUE. We have not said the Nevada county people wish to destroy our valley people, but we do say their industry has that effect, that is without law or precedent, That it isa cancer, if not soon eradicated willkill the patient, that when the last shot is from the monitor and the last blast shall have done its terrible work, desolation will reign supreme over mountain and valley.—Sutter County Farmer. Editor Oblyer, like the other antislickens journalists, takes too much poetical license. What they write generally sounds nicer than the productions of their uncultured brothers up here in the mountain fastnesses, but it doesn’t embrace as many sterling truths, They remind us of a voluble representative of a certain pro-granger publication who was in town the other day soliciting patronage. Among the sample copies of the paper he circulated as an‘ advertisement was une containing a descriptive sketch of Sacramento county, written by himzelf. An old hydraulic miner thoroughly conversant with the section treated glanced over the article and observed cas— nally that the author had drawn a pretty long bow in his estimates of the damage done by slickens. “I drew the picture very mild,” maintained the canvasser; ‘for if I had told the whole truth I should have said that at least eight hundred thousand acres of valuable laud in that valley will be ruined by debris if hydraulic mining is allowed to be carried on a few years longer,” The old miner said nothing, but fishing a stub of a pencil out of thé depths of his overall pocket, . figured for a moment on the margin of the paper. His calculations demonstrated that the bounds of Sacramento valley did not begin to contain so much land as the stranger had said was about to become a barron waste there all on account of slickens. The stranger forthwith changed the subject by inviting the specta-— tors in totake something, He hadn’t been less wild in his assertions than the men of the Bee and Appeal and Farmer, but he was more willing to admit h’s_eiror. NT RE OST AML TIO HY San Juan Times Items. The Alaska mine at Pike City, is again in full blast. It had been shut down for about a week owing to the mine being filled with water. The Transcrr Tt wants the Board of Equalization to be lenient with hydraulic miners, It thinks the State should receive no taxes from that in— dustry, Weconcur. Wesay strike out the entire assessment roll of the eogunty. If the hydraulic mines are closed down neither the mines nor any other property in the county will be worth a sou. The last Forest City Tribune*con— tained nearly a whale column of announcethents of names of parties as candidates for office, and nearly all of them are Republicans. In this county nearly all the namesof parties thus far announced 4s candidates for office are Democrats, See the differ— ence? In Sierra county a Democrat has no’show of an election to any office, hence members of that party remain in the back-ground. In this county the Democracy feel that they have a chance, and -hence there are now and will be many candidates for every office in the gift of our people. GO ecetinies erie Evrey art, trade, profession and crime was represented in the personnel of the audience at the recent New York prize fight. There was a’ large deputation of Congressmen who left the affairs of the nation to regulate themselves, while they ‘went to an entertainment which appeired to suit their taste exactly. If there were prize lights enough going on to draw awayaquoium, it might be the best. thing that could happen to the country. There is no prospect of any good which is to come from new legislation, and by stopping business where it is, no more mis@ \ief would be done. weer) At North San Juan, July 25th, Lolia’ A. Sher years, 10 months ond 29 . ys. At Nevada City, July 29th, 1882, George” Abijah, infant son of Geo and Kate N, Hoskins, aged-5 months and 4 days, The funeral will take place frum the Episcopal Church, (to-day, ) Sunday, at 4 o'clock p, mu. Friends and acquaintances a:e respectfully invited to attend. = BROWN & CALKINS, Proprietors. Nevada County Oficial Press, . OUR EXCHANGES. alf Minute Interviews With the Chiefs of the Sanctum. AN AMENDMENT SUGGESTED, (Sacramento Record-Union.) Says ‘the Rev. Dr. “Talmage: “Let us organize now an expedition against. Arctic selfishness, against Arctic pride, against Arctic exelusiveness.” Why no! add, doctor, against Arctie cheek? __31Y FOR TAT. (8. F. Daily Report.) The New York Sun suggests to the politiciansa brief and comprehensive platform viz: ‘‘No stealing;” and the politicians might suggest one just as compreheusive and three letters shorter to the newspapers, viz: “No lying.” GOOD RIDDANCE. (Tombstone Independent.) _’ That suave and oily-tohgued individual, the expert, once so numer-— ous in Arizona mining circles, isnow conspicuous By his absence. He has run his course, and hied himself to newer fields. There is a healthier tone in mining circles throughout the Territory since those swindlers left us. POUR NEVAI'A, (Public Opinion.) The lunatics belonging to the State of Nevada have been taken from Stockton and placed in the new asylum at Reno. The sagebrush State is very prolific in insane persons, and if her mines continue to be worked, it were as well to fence in the entire State and call it a lunatic asylum. THE SUNDAY LAW. (Oakland Times,) In the smaller towns of the inter— ior there seems to be a growing sentiment in favor .of the Sunday law. The farm hands and tramps have a grand carouse on that day, and all kinds of debauchery, supplemented by fights and murders, make these places unfit for the inhabitation of decent people on that day. Some of the horny handed Grangers who have no conscientious scruples against a quiet game of poker in the bask room of a saloon, on Sunday, ary of the opinion that the Sunday law ought to be enforced against the rioters. A SQUARE STAND. (Sierra County Tribune.) ‘Party fealty,” isa very pretty and high sounding phrase, but it is too often used for the basest of purposes. Itis the slogan of all the corrupt combinations of men which fatten’ upon public plunder; it is the rallying cry of every scheming politician who stands grinning as he uses this ready tool of his profession; itis the open sesame of thieving cliques as they gloatover anticipated spoils, and it is the skeleton key by which robbers enter the closed vaults of the people’s treasury. The Tribune wants none of it. It will be faithful to the great party to which it belongs—alike through triumph or defeat, but will not defend or com-— promise with the corruptambition of preteaded leaders who seek to lead the party by its nose to certain destruction.
