Insane.
JA man named Smith, hailing from
some point above, made his appearance in town yesterday forenoon, and
created some excitement by proposing to purchase anything and everything he came across in the stores or
on the streets. He first purchased a}
-ease of jewelry at Knowlton’s, and
went to the Bank tu draw ihe money,
but that institution refused to honor
his draft. He then turned his attention to other articles, and found no
difficulty in making his purchases,
but was unable to raise a dollar with
which to pay.;. Officer Leavitt finally
proposed to conduct him to a bank?
where his checks would be honored,
and he unsuspiciously followed the
officer into the jail, where he was
locked up. a alan
Specimen Thief.
ef: Early Sunday morning, .Marskal
Getchell, while passing the cabin of
a Chinaman on the south side of the
town, disvovered the fellow busily at
work pounding up quartz specimens.
Suspecting. the specimens to be
stolen, the Marshal put them in a
sack, which he gave to the Chinaman, and started with him for town.
On the way in, the Celestial dropped
the sack and ran, and has not yet
been caught. It has since been ascertained that the Celestial has been
working at the Pittsburg, and the
specimens undoubtedly came from
that mine.
Preparations,
The firemen were at work yesterday, making all necessary arrangements for the accommodation of
their visitors from Grass Valley and
San Juan. Inthe rear of each hall,
nicely covered and decorated tables
were put up, and we apprehend the
generous and hearty welcome extended the Nevada firemen at Grass
Valley last year, will not be forgotten to-day. We predict for all visiting firemen, a most pleasant time.

It does not really seem possible
that such extraordinary inducements
can be offered to the people of Nevada county, as are being made-at the
present time by Banner Brothers, of
this city, yet such is the fact, and it
behooves all our people, both in this
locality as well as in distant parts of
the county, to take advantage of the
favorable opportunity now presented
to them. In: San Francisco “elothing is sold at a very high figure, as
well-as in New York, and within the
last month, ajl woolen goods have advanced from 10 to 20 per cent., owing
to the failure in the wool clip. Yet
in the mountains of California, in
the city of Nevada, where heavy
freights are to be added, everything
in the clothing line is sold at 100 per
cent. cheaper than in the above
places. It does seem unaccountable,
nevertheless it is true, and the cause
of it can be easily explained. The
well known firm of Banner Bros., on
the corner of Broad and Pine streets,
who have the largest and most beautiful stock of goods ever seen in a
clothing establishment.in the State,
are selling off their stock for the
purpose of engaging, in business elsewhere, and are offering their clothing
so cheap that it surprises everybody.
Among the goods which will be sold
at extraordinary bargams, are fine
broadcloth dress suits, beaver suits,
cassimere suits, linen suits, white
duck suits, and every other kind and
quality to be had. They have also a
large assortment of hats, of every
style and description, shirts, gloves,
trunks, valises, boots and shoes.—
Their furnishing department for gentlemen cannot be excelled anywhere.
Banner. Brothers’ are. determined to
close business in Nevada city, and
the very low prices at which they are
selling goods, is good evidence that
they mean what they say. During
the past ten years, this firm have enjoyed the goed will of all who have
had dealings with them, and their
goods and prices have always given
the best satisfaction. Merchants in
tke clothing business at San Juan,
Moore’s Flat, North Bloomfield, You
Bet, and in fact everywhere else in
the mountains, by calling on Banner
Brothers, will do much _ better by
selecting from their immense stock
than by going to San Francisco for
supplies. Such opportunities to save
money seldom occur, and the people
of Nevada county should not fail to
take advantage of the present one,
i oe
The Universal Safeguard,
It is useless for State Legislatures to pass
laws for the preservation of the public
health, if the great law of self-preservation,
which depends for its enforcement upon the
will of the individual, fs suffered to remain
a dead letter.
There is scarcely an adult member of the
community, of either sex, in the country,
who has not seen the testimony in favor«of
Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters, furnished over
their own signatures by persons of acknowledged eminence in science, literature, art,
conumerce, and every department of business
and professional life. These witnesses have
declared in the most explicit terms that the
preperation is a safeguard against epidemics,
a sovereign remedy for dyspepsia, a valuable
alitibilious medicine, a promoter of appetite,
a genial and harmless stimulant, a good acclimating medicine, a strengthener of the
nerves, @ general invigorant, a protection
and impure water, and that it imparts a degree of vigor and activity to the vital forces
which is not communicated by any other of
the tonics and stomachics in use. Under
these circumstances the self-preservative
law of nature should teach every rational
person.who, either by reason of inherent debility or in consequence of exposure to unwholesome influences, is in peril of losing
the greatest of all temporal blessings,
health, the importance of using the Bitters
asa defensive medicine. Dyspeptics who
neglect to give it a trial are simply their enemies. It is guaranteed to cure indigestion
in all its forms, and the bilious and nervous
will find nothing in the whole range of official and proprietary medicines which will
afford them the samerelief.
