For Treasuyer, For Supervisor, B.F.S {-Jofiathan Clark, gest crowds “i county participated in the celebration of the Fourth at Grass Valley on Tuesday last.— The people of this part of the county turned . . _ Out en masse, and there is nota mining camp nor a raoch between the Yuba end Bear river which was not represented. The military, consisting of the Pacific Guard of Dutch Flat, the Little York -Union. Guard and the Nevada Light Guard, under com“mand of Major N. W. Knowlton, left. this city at 8 o’clock for Grass Valley. They were met and escorted into town by the Grass Valley Union Guard, whose guests they were. The military stacked arms at . Hamilton Hall, where an excellent lunch ‘Was served by Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton. The entire city was decorated with flags and evergreens, and the national banner was was displayed upon almost every building. The procession was to have formed at 12 o'clock, but through some mistake it was started much éutlier. It was’ without exception the largest procession we have seen in the county. The military led off, under Major Knowlton, E.G. Waite Adjutant and E. F. Spence Assistant Surgeon on the staff (The Grass Valley Company numbered . ' about 40 men under. Capt. Doty, Nevada Company 75 men under Capt. Lancaster, , Little York Company, 45 men under Capt. Atkins, and the Dutch Flat Company, 40 men under Capt. Kopp. Then followed the Grass Valley Fire Department under Chief Engineer 8. D. Leavitt, consisting of the Tiger Hook, Ladder and Bucket Company, and the Protection Hose Company. The Gook Templars came next ia order Next came the turn-out of Charley Osborn of the Glenbrook Park. It consisted of a fine dou~ ble team drawing a skeleton wagon, a single horse and sulky followed, and arace horse, rode by a jocky boy-in costume brought up the rear, This was'under command of the proprietor of the Park. The Finean Brotherhood, of Allison Ranch and Grass Valley, tothe number of four hundred able bodied men came next in,order. They were. followed by a neatly decorated car, in which were thirty-six little girls representing the Btates of the Union. Then came the school children of Grass Valley. The Forest Spring school under charge of B. J. Watson had two beautifully decorated care in the pros Ceasion. Citizens in carriages and on horseback concluded the immense precession.— Among the schvol children was a Company Of boys neatly uniformed and armed with Wooden inuskets. They are pupils of J. M. . Daya, and go through theevolutions as well as old soldiers, They acted as escort of the -echool children. The procession was more than a mile in length After marching through the town the procession was dismussed at the paviltun. Wilson's large cirous tent was siou crowded to its utmost napacity with people, desirous of hearing the exercises of the day. We were unable tu weta place in the teat, but thuse whe listened to the exercises pronvunce the urativa of Rev. M C. Briggs excellent. At 3 o'clock the military twok dinner at Hamilton Hall, and at 4 o'clock they had dress parade on diamissed. The Ancient Oriental Order of Humility paraded at 5 o'clock and it is said vluded. _. toitedissolution. He speaks of the jeslous. and of sundry work. » THE late private seeretary of one uf Jeff, Davia’ most in@uential Cabinet officers. has recetitly published an interesting expose of the affairs of the Confederacy just previous ies and backbitings among the chief conspibrators,;-of Davia’ influence or. lnck of influence, of the condition of the rebel exchequer abroad, -and of the appalling suddenness of, the calamity which overtook the rebel cause, a Southern. stand-point. The Confederate military strength (before the surrender of . Richmond) east of the Mississippi was about 100;000 men, all told, according to this authority.—_Davie_aad-his fellaw fugitives had but $500,000 in their wallets on leaving the rebel. capital, and thissum was mainly in’ silver, which, by this writer’s showing, accounts for its bulk The. principal portion of the rebel treasure, it seems,.was in foreign hands—a fact which at least shows that, in spite of all the bluster and brag to the contrary, the necessity of an early flight had been anticipated, and in part provided for, & considerable time before the surrender. Many of the passengers by the America, whwu were wrecked on the Golden Rule, are wandering about San Francisco insufficiently clad and utterly destitute, looking for ey ARRIVALS AT THE NATIONAL EXCHANGE HOTEL.
