NNE, CES, Ne ERS! ‘ld! ITE. TAINS, supplied y recoma is the the past, ERY,,J prising publisher, and as a literary work “works of the day. The reader who pe‘ruses its pages will \be. kept “in bonds” now in this county collecting data for “ter place in the evening. SRE ESF as 2 : NEVADA CITY, CALIFURNIA. © LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. * Rev. Mr. EaRLe.— Ha. Transcript : Rumor has-at length forced her way into the paper by enriching the Rev. Mr. Earle with, $1,500, for his services in Nevada, and with about the same amount in ‘Grass Valley. If true, Mr. Earle’s friends will be glad that he was as highly appreciated and well rewarded, and have only themselves to reflect upon. or congratulate, while tlose who gave nothing have no cause to complain. . The tacts, however, are these: All that was given to Rev. Mr. Earle in Nevada and Grass Valley for his fifty sermons was a little over $500, cand the sum total, including the sales of hymn books was $730. Rev. Mr. + Earle begins his laborsin Santa Cruz, next Sabbath, and ifthe people there sare disposed to express their high appreciation of his services, all who know him willsay amen. J.H. WARREN. CHINESE Kires.—The Chinese beat <any people im the world in making kites. Yesterday we saw one representing a bug about. the shape of a beetle. Its horns consisted of a bow, from the ends -of which a ribbon like strip of bamboo was stretched, making an Holian harp. -As this kite darted about, the wild’ blowing athwart the strings, produced the effect of a choir of ‘music in the air, sweetly mingling all . the harmonic notes. Atone time’ the music would ‘swell out in: full loud tones, and then ‘almost die away, apparently in the distance,'as the wind:increased or diminished. The tones could be heard distinctly.in apy part of the town. . “In Bonps.”=-This is the title of an exceedingly interesting novel, written by Laura Preston, and published by A. Roman & Co., San Francisco, Typo-graphically it isa credit to the enteritwill compare favorably with the best the most interesting, until the volume .is completed, and will leave it with regret that it isnot longer. To George ‘R. Crawford we are under obligations for a copy of the work, and those who desire to read it, may procure the book .at his store on Commercial street. THE Crrcus.—The New York circus with its wonderful riders, trained animals, and great attractions will give a second entertainment in this city tonight. Among the new features of this show is the wonderful performance of the trained buffalo and his Indian rider. The feats of horsemanship and the performance of the children connected with the show, are excellent. The tent will no doubt be crowded to-night. THE CELEBRATION aT San Juan.— We learn from gentlemen who were present that the Fourth at San Juan passed off agreeably to all present. Besides the usual observance of such days, the citizens “got up” a splendid public dinner, which all hands enjoyed. ——S— EE . Late Paprrs.—We are indebted to George R. Crawford for a supply of late Eastern papers. Crawford has Leslie’s and Harper's weeklies,Leslie’s monthly, the New York Ledger and all other papers received by the last steamer. ““In Town.—John 8. Hittell, Esq., is the Commissioner of Mining, J. Ross Browne. Mr. Hittell is thoroughly competent for such work as his efforts heretofore have demonstrated. THE Fourth was observed at Quaker Hill by. a picnic of the school children. A pleasant dance was given at the lat‘Scarcrry of Teams.—At least one hundred thousand tons of freight is now lying in Marysville, awaiting shipment . to Grass Valley, Nevada and other interior towns in California, as well as for Gold Hill, Virginia and other points in eight-male team ean find plenty of} ‘. bration on the Fourthpof July, and evfeity orcounty. . _. ® lw. 8S. These Bitters, recently introduced in our city, are fast gaining favor, and are looked on with confidence by all who have wsedthem. At’ this season of the year, when the system is liable to disease, they act admirably as a preventative. Being an excellent tonic and blood purifyer, and avery pleasant bevérage withal, they are bound to become very popular. Sarsaparilla, one of the best. blood. purifyers, is one of the ingredients used inthe Bitters. Gregory & Waite have a large stock on hand, which they are selling wholesale or retail at agent’s rates. cat RHIGOLENE SpRAY.—Those suffering with Odontalgia (or toothache, which is the same thing) and desiring teeth extracted without pain, should call on Dr. C.
