A pavilion was erected in which to hold the. literary exercises. The Orutor of the. Day was J. M. Walling, of this city, who acquitted himself most adwirably, being well entitled to thé enthusiasticapplause which his fine address élicited at its conclusion. The Poet, Miss 8. H. G.as4on, as well as Mr. R, Wing who read-the Declaration of Inde= pendence, are both deserviug of wnuch honor for the excellence of their efforts. Bewitching vocal music was reudered by Prof. H.W. «Hand and the Glee Clab, .pro miment ainong the solos and choruses given being those entitled ‘‘G@lorious Stars’’ Owing to the precarious condition in which Hon, Wm.Watt lay in bis -roont_at the hotel, the -federal-saluteof 13 guus advertised to be fired at desire exhibited by those who were celebrating tv do nothing tbat might increase the suffering ofthe injured mao, present.» deep solicitude ou the part . of the people regarding ‘his welfare, and the discharge ,uf explosives in the vicinity of the hotel was by common consent itabooed, each individual acting as a self appointed pre~ server of quiet. In the afternoon sponts of all kinds were provided with which to eutertain the multitude. But the procession of the Morribles was the great feature of the day. here were line, and of all the fantastic -makeups ever beheld somv of those therein presented borethe palm. The performers went through with their funny antic;, and the spectators burst buttons from their clothes in the general hilarity which pyevai'ed, In the evening’a very handsome pyrotechnical display took place, after which a gramd ball was held iu the Pavilion, Daneing was continued nearly all night. en a CHINESE SLUICE ROBBER SHOT “The sluices of the Pioneer. YF After all, we are inclined to bement” is most effective ia mending the ways of petty offenders. By “‘popular punishment,’’ we mean the Forest City, and for the particnlars of which we are indebted to I. J: Rolfe, of this city. The other day a man upthere shamefally beat his wife. A flourishing brauch of the “Order of 1001,” or perhaps more properly ‘‘E Clampus Virtus”’ exists at Forest City. The members of the organization learned of tha oatrage that the brute had been guilty of, and took his.case in hand, They first disguised themselves with masks,. ladder. Next they captured the wife whipions-and robes, promiscuously into the suffocating dust. But the-horse didn’t stop to sympathize with his victims. He tore along down the grade with the ever-turned vehicle at his heels for a distance ot perhaps ten or twelve rods, when—slap, bang, crash—and auother ¢arriage. headed in the same. direction keeled over, and the thunderstruck occupants, A> -R. Lorfand Witham . Grovea, came rolling out upon the scene. The buckboard bad collided with the-carriage, breaking the rear axle of the latter, and demoralizing dollurs. ‘Ihe force of the shock caused the running borse to ~break loose, and it came scampering into the city, bringing nothing but the harness it had on. The horse atattempt to break away. Itisa reall escaped-injury;although we can/. hardly agree in.the popular verdict Fespecting the mattgr, which is toy the effect that the whole affair ‘Wasa job put up between them to give the newspapers anitem. One \of the turnouts—the buck board —belonged at Graham's stable, and the other at Wellington’s. To the runaway horse, no more than its driver, can blame for the accident be at-. tached, The quick-sighted and intelligent animal had discovered the conveyance in advance, and in endeavoring to turn out 80 as. to pass . by, had brought about the catastrophe.THE HAYMAKERS, The beautiful operatic cantata of “the Haymakers,” as rendered by Grass Valley talent, was repeated at Hamilton Hall, in that place on Fried to its titmost eapacity by a very fashionable and critical audience, and many were unable to procure séats? “The Haymakers”is admirably adapted to the efforts of amateurs, having interspersed through it here and there a multitude of simple but effective situations well calculated to create a favorable impression, even when rendered in an ordinary manner. The music throughout, which ‘consists of a fine selection of chroe uses, quintettes, quartettes, trios; duets and solos, is of a high order.— As produced on Friday night, under the directorshis of Prof. Seward, the entertainment generally speaking was worthy of the patronage it reeived. While none of the solos or duets given displayed voices of more than ordinary compass and sweetaot remember of ever hearing ed outside of professional circles. The edosing tableau was a fine bit of artistic groupiug, and will long be nemaembered by all’ whe were 80 fortumate as to witness it, MR. WATT MUCH IMPROVED: Parties arriving in this city yesterday from North Blogmfie:d, bring the joyful intelligence that Mr. Watt had been gradeally improving for several hours prior to their de parture for here. The physicians are now firm in the opinion that his chaaces of recovery are most favorable. : —+-e-— -___. M. E. CHURCH, Services to-day at the nsval hours.
