All of these companies, with one exception, were Chinese. There are probabiy-net4ess-than-fifteen—Chinese companies, givingemploy ment to between two and three hundred of their countrymen. There are, besides these, a Chinese company working Little Deer Creek and one working in Gold Run; both tributaries to Deer Creek. White men have worked these over and. over, until gold in paying quantities (to them at least), could not be found, and, then they sold them, at. good prices, to Chinese companies, who have worked them continually and appear to be doing well. We know of one instance where they paid $2,200 for a creek claim considered almost worthless, and they are now engaged in putting in expensive works to open it up in @ proper. manner. We have no doubt they will do well. Had this claim remained in the hands of the party from whom they purchased it, probably it would never have been worked. They appear to have reduced this kind of mining toa science. Old abandoned claims; that nobedy thought had gold enough in them to buy salt, have been purchased by Chinamen and worked with profit. ‘In order to see how they manage, it is but necessary to take a walk upon the Suspension bridge, as two companies . are working in sight of it—one below and the other above.
