They are now preparing to commence drifting. ‘Several parties are prospecting on the goat ranch, a mile below Washington, and at the upper end of Brandy. Flat. They havea fair prospect of striking something rich. Road Improvement. ‘ “Read Commissioner Cleveland bas Jet a contract to Thos. Nilon to make some excavations on tle road leading out from West Broad:street, near Conly’s residence. Last Spring the Supervisors gave Nevins & Co. permission to sluice away the bill, they agresing to cut out the road bed so as to make nearly a level. grade, and: thus greatly improve the road. Nevins & Co. have perfofmed their part of the contract, being compelled to cut away considerable bed rock, which they did not anticipate when the arrangement was made, Nilon is to receive $100 for exeavating the bank on this side. When this is done it will be a first rate Summer road, but.as it is on the soft graaite it will have to be graveled to be passable in the Winter. This can be done, however, at small expense, as there.is on abundance of gravel in the worked out mining claims near by. Within the past few days there have been destructive fii*s at San Francisco, Sacramento, Gold Ba;' Oroville, Sualphar Springs, and other plaves ; also at -Grags Valley and North San Juan, in this county. The most of these fires were doubtless caused by the fireworks which patriotic Young America insists on burning as his share in the Fourth of July celebration, and which he generally keeps ap for several days. At thisseason of the year, when the wooden baildings are as dry as tinder and heated-by the rays of the sun, the smallest spark may kindle a fire which . will apread rapidly over the town. We have happily so far escaped, but in view of the great danger the citizens generally should be extremely watchful, and the fire companies shoald sce to it that every thing is in readiness for immediate-and effective work in case an alarm is given. ~ a een Mining at Eureka. Thomas Fleyd, superintendent of the Muteal mine, inthe Eureka district, informs fie Grass Valley Union that a clean up just made, after twenty-two $5,000. ‘This isa handsome yield for the number of stamps and the amount of labor émployed ia the mine. Besides the Mutual, the Black & Young mine is looking and paying well. The Birehville Company, after running a long tunnel, have struck a strong ledge, which shows handsomely in free gold andsalphurets. Cousiderable prospecting is going on in the district, and altogether miners are in better spirits and more confident than they have been in & long time. yp Saco ane into the County Treasary daring the month of June were as eee ane fi ra nisin eae 2 ‘saa flames. The project. of bringing a new ditch into San Juan and Sebastopol, by the American Mining Co, has been given up. The matters at issue between the Eureka Lake Co. and the American Spooner, Brown & Co., has been amicably arranged, and on Monday next the. American Co. will commence -washing. These claims have paid good dividends heretofore, and. the. renewal ot work thereon will add materially to the business of San Juan. Cliizens? Meeiing at San Juan. At a meeting of the citizens of San Juan, held on Thursday evening, to take measures to protect their property from fire, a report was made that the Chinese would be allowed to rebuild on the burned district, provided that nu building should be erected more than fourteen feet. in. bight, nor within seventy feet of any building now occupied by the whites.
