NS t ‘The Daily Transcript. fo. 82 Commercial street; Nevada City, Cal CIBCULATES IN ee Grass Valley, Rough & Ready, Spenceville North San Juan, French Corral, Sweetland, North Bloomtield, Moore's Fiat, Graniteville, Truckee, and every othertown of Nevada county; alsoin Placer and Sierra counties, at Sacramento, San cisco—in fact, throughout the State “‘from Siskiyou to San Diego" from the Sierra to the Sea.’ WEDNESDAY, MAROH. 20, 1889. ‘WHIST’S VOTARIES. The Excelsior Club’s Meeting on Monday Evening. The members of Excelsior Whist Club visited Mr. and Mrs. A. Walrath Monday evening and had an enjoyable time. Everybody met with a hearty, old-fashioned reception which put . them. them in good humor and on playing terms immediately. The hostess had arranged seats and tables for twenty persons and when that number assembled the fun began. At half past eight the whistle sounded -that sent . . the ten couples onthe circuit. Two or three were inclined to be obstinate and refused to move but by persistent efforts of their adversaries and the—tepeated blowing of the whistle they moved on and made the -tour of the tables. There was one couple held a firm-grip-on-the deal-and-could not-be driven or persuaded to make a second trip around the rogm. The first letters of their names are Geo. E. Turner and Mrs. Lester. They bad ‘‘come to stay’ asthey said, and they made their words good by routing every couple that measured trumps with This coup. éd captured the first prizes. George smiled his best Missouri smile-and_felt se-happy that he; promised to tell a first-class story at the next meeting: Mr. Norval Douglas, Sr., and. Mrs. J. M. Hadley very good naturedly took the booby prizes. Ed Tompkins and Mrs. J. V. Hunter wanted them and proved a very good second. Ed’s native modesty and the fact that he has just been ‘elected to membership that evening is what prevented him from getting away with the booby. There is one marked feature at all these whist parties and that is you never find anyone holding a good hand. One and all declare they never held such horrid hands in their lives. This matter was discussed after play was over and on motion the Secretary was instructed to notify members to furnish their own trumps in the future, thereby doing away with a deal of kicking. Mrs. Walrath, as_ sisted by Mrs. Wm. Cole, Mrs. B. 8, Rector and Messrs. A. and R. C. Walrath, served the regular collation. cle’s or the Examiner’s. « SAVING MONEY. Some Points Worth Newspaper Readers’? Attention. The regular subscription price of each of the leading San Francisco dailies (Call, Chronicle and Examiner) is $6 a year.in advance, and no sutscriber can obtain them from the publication offices at any better rates. Where they are paid for weekly, as a majority of the stibscribers in this county pay for them, the cost is $7.80 a year. Of these three papers, the Daily Call is in all respects equal to the best, and in some ways superior to the others. The daily edition consists of eight pages, and the Sunday edition of from tweive pages upwards. Its telegraphic dispatches domestic and foreign are as full asveither the ChronIt has correspondents in every city and important town of the civilized ‘world: Its sporting, social, market, mining, farming and other special departments are the best of any California paper’s. Its editorial writers are the ablest in San Francisco. It is fearless, independent and enterprising, but never drifts into sensationalism. It is essentially che people’s paper—a paper that should be in every family, and business place. You can get the Damy Transcrier (price $6) and the Daily Call (price $6) for $8 in advance! The annual subscription price of the San FYancisco Weekly Call is $1.25. The wéelly contains the cream of the news and editorial matter appearing in the Daily. Newspaper men generally as well as the reading. public who are’ posted regard it asthe best _weekly paper printed west of the Mississippi River. If you pay $6 in advance fora year’s subscription to the Damy Transerrer (which is cheap enough for the leading paper of Nevada county) you will receive the Weekly Call for one year free of cost! Texas Siftings (the New York edition has 117,000 circalation in America and the London edition has over 50,000. in Englarid) costs $4 a year net where subscribed for from the -publication office, and when bought at newstands or on the cars by the single Copy it will cost you $5.20 a year. Siftngs is an elegantly printed and copiously illustrated paper of sixteen Wrge pages, and isthe leading ‘‘funny” journal of the world. It is full te the brim of original wit and humor, every line of which is fit to be read and laughed .over in the home circle or in polite society. : For only $6.50 paid in advanse you It was a hard blow to thé ex-Senator . to.see the guests enjoy themselves . eating good bread and butter wiih tea} and coffee. He is perfectly satisfied . and enjoys this plain diet at the resi-. dence of other members of the club, . but when it came his turn , to entertainhe began talking about oysters, ete., whereupon his good lady read the bylaws and he _ subsided. The prizes given on the occasion were worksof art, beauty and utility. Two of the‘&’rticles were the handiwork of Mrs. Walrath, and were greatly admired by the club and highly appreciated by the winners. The next meeting will be at the residence of Mrs. J. M. Hadley. Anniversary Party. On “Friday evening, the 26th of April, occurs the second annivergary of the founding of Neva Rebekah Degree Lodge, I. 0.0. F. The organization-will celebrate the occasion by omen giving a ball at Armory Hall on that date. Thomas Peard, J. C. Rich . Mrs. A. Blumenthal, Mrs. R. H. Formah and Miss Fernande Muller have been: appointed a committee “to arrange for the party.
