Tae War Expep—We have received force of rebels by Kirby Smith, and, with it ‘the anneuncement that the authorities have —e ‘ordered the release of all prisoners sententhings indicate that the-war is at an end ; that‘the dawn of peace iat hand Not such peace as the copperheads sought for, pur‘chased at the cost of SH Union and dictated ‘by slave power, but peaee that gives safety, strength and glory tothe country. The results of this struggl@just past will extend to ages to ‘come. ‘Lhe reign of terror ‘which ‘once had a ‘rope. for every man who dared talk. of the horrors of slavery ; the spirit, which mobbed presses, bung preachers and prescribed every miin whese advocacy of liberty led him to assail slavery, has been utterly crushed, and now throughout the Idngth and breadth of the land freedom of speech and of the press are rights which can no longer be denied the Ameriean citizen. ‘The dawn of the country's glory is at hand, __ and _will-soon bs ifeati gress of the nation. The past contest broke the only fetters that bound our country, and being now free, with the-old Declaration of 1776 no longer a lie, America will fulfil her high destiny. No patriot will-ever feel that too dear-a price has been paid for the peace ‘we enjoy. The result of this struggle will ‘brighten every star in the nationul galaxy and clothe the nation in rubes of transcendentglory. ¥rom henceforth, in this land, ‘every man wall safely enjoy the the bles‘sings of liberty,;and “sing the merry song of peace to all his neighbors.” ‘Nor a CanpipaTe.—In to-day's paper we publish a card from Mr. Sears in which he denies being a candidate for the Senate. That we were mistaken in the , matter is chargable to Mr. Sears’ friends. Before Judge Belden was in the field wo heurd Sears spuken of and after that time when the “Shorts” were bunting the county over for some one to run against Belden he was again spoken of as a probable candidate. Judge Belden is the avowed friend of Sargent. Ifsent to the Senate he will do all in ‘power to make Mr. Sargent Senator.— The enemies of Sargent found ao man streng “enough to run against Belden, and therefore, knowing their own weakness, pretend to support him. But does any reasonable man suppose that the faction in the . ‘county which is now engaged in heaping abuse upon Sargent, the nen who dnily villify and slander him would send Belden or any other man tothe Senate whe would Bupport him if itcould be prevented. Why .according te their statements; Sargent is dishonest, incapable, a sympathizer with Copperheads, a demagogue, deserves banging, and yet they say they are in favor of sending Belden to the Senate, when they know be will use bis influence to elect such a man to thé U. 8. Senate. If the “Short Haira” believed one half of the statements they make about Sargent does any reasonable man believe they would vote for an pen and avowed friend of tis ia-Convention? Away with auch nonsense;; Sears and tia friends are for Belden because they dare net oppose him. We donot believe that themen who . now denounce him so bitterly, would ever permit any friend of that gentleman to represent the'county if they got the power in Cotitention The very statement that they support Belden either gives the falaehood to their denunciations of Sargent or eleeshows theni to‘be totally devuid of principle. We wilingly concede that Mr. Sears is not a candidate now, but at the same time we do not think he would refuse to serve if’ the nomination was forced upon him. Joun C. Baeckinniper.—Breckinridge wes not surrendered with either the armjes of Le or Johnson. He is not autong the paroled men er officers and therefore has none of the rights of those surrendered. He was Secretary of war in ths late rebellion ~, and there will probably be little difficulty jn wonricting him of treason as also there 12 litWe of bis punishment, We are glad this is so. Of all men engaged in the rebellion he mained in Washington asa tpy after the rebellion commenced, ysing all means in his estroythe@overnment power tod and te carry tucky out of the Uni After failing in tisid Ae Jeft for the South to use the information he had received against the country. He is one of the most infamous of all the conspirntoré, aud if ever a villain deserved Spo Bt oe i Fapidpro-t ie that Mr. Sargent has a slate: made =a for . ly as‘a word to say for or san who aspires to a county of, i ! These tools. and sycophants of John Conness had better refer to the last fulmination_of. their bosg “Short” and learn alittle sense from it, if possible. Mr Conness tells the part he -toyk in giving the State its present officials.. He went to Low to get. him to be a eandidate, He claims eredit for putting his finger in the pie when the ticket for Supreme 8. should nde against any v fice. management of the affairs of a county, with the interests of which he has been identified. for the jast fifteen years? Is not he as much entitled to a choice in the affairs of bia own county as John Conness in the State? Who fought the spirit of secession in days agone, when these niggardly whelps were cheek by jowl with Southern chivalry? Who bas labored more than A A. Sargent for liberal principles aud for the interests of Nevada county! Miserable parveuns are mow,at work sevking to blacken his charaeter.— They tried it last year and were indignantly rebuked’ by the people. ‘The same fate awaits them this year. —. The hireling print of this city insi the county offices, and most attrocious serts that he has promised dozens of men the same positions. ~-What shamelessness !— Put any of the candidates listed among Mr. Sargent’s supporters upon the stand and not one of them will say he ever gave hima promise of the kind. “He has said to all that he did* not care tostrike for one friend against another, and has kept aluof from the scramble for county. offices. This, every man in the city knows. Make the candidates witnesses, citizens of Nevada, and put down the lying hounds of faction, led on by men without character or brains. VinDicaTor. * Ed. Transcript :— 1 nviived an article in your paper of Suturday, in which you reiterdte that Iam a candidate for the State Senate against Judge Belden. I am not a candidate fur any position, but have, and shall give to Judge Belden my sincere and hearty support. I haye not said or intimated to any person that I was or would bea candidate, and I respectfully ask you to produce anything to the contrary. June 10th. W. H.
