a NEVADA CITY. CALIFORSIA, PRICES OF S1LK Cocoons In FRANCE. For the benefit afid information of those who are engaged in silk enlture in this State, we copy from the Monitor des serly in his speech at San Francisco i; solemnly declared that the adoption of the Fifteenth Amendment would—be followed by amalgamation. The old “Democratic idea in the very same language. — Even the--most—intelligent Democratic. leaders, such as Casserly, ' who was exalted by his party toa place in the Senate, ring the same old tune only on # new string. They solemnly declared a few years ago that the abomation, afterwards that-the rejection of the Fourteenth Amendment would alone prevent intermingling of races, and how they have started the ides, by the mouth of their Senator that the rewould alone prevent mixing the races’ The key note of the whole speech i that .American citizens. are only protected. against amalgamation with Africans by prohibitory enactments. How flattered Senator Casserly’s auditors must have felt ‘when he gravely informed them that the only preventive against marrying a negro was the defeat_of the proposed amendment, for this is just what his language means.— _ A Democratic stumper last year said to a public meeting: “If you. want to see ~~ your family sitting at the same table with a nigger, and your daughter married to niggers, vote this Republican ticket.” What an exalted appreciation such men. must have for their associates, how uncertain they must feel as to their own safety against amalgama~ tion. Does it not seem strange that Democrats don’t see-that the leaders are placing them in the same category . andon the same level with the inferior races, when they attempt to terrify them into the party ranke by the cry of amalgamation, or fear of Negro or Chinese equality, Cost on SLEEPING CaRré.—From a note written by Shaw, to B. H. Price, stage agent at Grass Valley, says the Union, we learn that half a section berth on a sleeping car costs five dollars from Sacramento to Promontory,— A person having half a section can take a partner in if he chooses, without extra charge. A whole section, which is a stateroom, costs ten dollars for the same distance; The fare from Sacramento to Promontory is $50. All these are coin prices. A passenger who goes East can make his calculations as to the cost of the trip. IMPROVEMENTS.—The Union says: A friend who has been “house hunting” informs us that he carinot find a-house. for rent in all Grass Valley. Every ____ place is full, both business houses and . GRASSHOPPERS.—The Los Angeles News says that large numbers of grass~ hoppers have made their appearance in San Jose township. In some localities the young crops have been entirely destroyed. Deatus.—There were 65-deaths Jast week in San Francisco, with eight new cases Of small pox. A short street between Third and Fourth, near Folsom, was entirely blockaded by ropes last . week, on account of small pox, It seems to have taken a new start: THE colored people of Virginia have petitioned General Canby to grant them equal privileges in cars-and steamboats with whites. The General referred them tothe Courts for redress of all such grievances. One hundred and seventy-five acres of standing grain, on the lands of Can+ non & Staples, and ten acres on Ed-~ mond’s Ranch, near Vaca Station, Sola~ no county, were burned by fire from a locomotive. a ae ses Tue Amador Ledger gives several reasons why the Mint should be removed from San Francisco, adding: “Besides all the other advantages, the Bank of California will be too far from the Mint to be of any disadvantage.” Tue Central Pacific Railroad Company are building a yery commodious hospital for the use‘of their employees at the corner of Cand Thirteenth streets without the land or the furniture will be about $30,000. THE ALASKA CLAIMs.—The Alaska Company have located seven claims of twenty feet front each, fronting on Mooney Flat ravine, and running back to the centre of the ridge bounded on the north by the Nixon claims. THe Bricklayers’ Union at. Washingresidences. Ina state of strike, when men are leaving every day, this isa little surprising. We notice the usual spring improvements about business places and along the business streets.— A new aod improved sidewalk has beun put down in front of fhe Exchange Hotel and in front of Delano’s bank. This _ new thing should be extended a little distance below Delano’s. . SATISFACTORILY EXPLAINED.—The _ Spauigh Minister complains to Secretary Pish that the Peruvian Monitors, bought of the United States, are sus~ piciously lurking among the West Indies, aa if intending to help the Cubans. The Secretary learns from the Peravian Minister that they are detained there until late in the Autumn only becausd the Winter passage is safer through the Straits of Magellan; and vhis explanation, with the Secretary's further assurance that Peru has given bonds not to usé these purchases in aid of Cuba satisfies the Spaniard. REFUNDING.—Messrs. McCormick & Loutgemheizer, the Committee appointed to collect funds to defray the expenses of bringing Herr Schnell to this county, collected $176. Herr Schnell not having been seen. in time, and having settled-in. El Dorado county, th committee went round and refund the money which had been contributed.
