. Of these three papers, the Daily
. Gall is in all respects equal to the FOOTHILL CLIMATE,
Why Ours Surpasses Sonthern
Califernia’s.
Prof. James G. Clark of Chicago
Park writes‘as follows in the Horti~
culturist :
I see that the editor of the Redlands
Citrograph takes exceptions to my
4rgument in the Minneapolis Spectator in favor of a climate like Chicago
Park, where winter is accompanied by
a little frost and snow. Among other
interesting conundrums, he propounds
the following:
“Why is it, if a ‘little frost is con-!
ducive to health, that eminent physicians, after considering tables of temperature of the whole civilized earth,
send their patients to a frostless climate, ifitcan be had where civilized
~ Creature comforts are also to be found?
Why is it that the most luscious fruit«
are grown in, practically, frostless localities?
all classes, who have the means, seek
frostless climates all over the world,
_ finding relief, only in those places
where frosts are almost unknown?”
Ireply, by asking why it is that
-when yellow fever rages in gur Southern cities, the people of those cities
are longing and praying for frost? Be~
cause it kills malaria and disease
germs.
Iwas not speaking of the Sicrra
” Neyada foothills, as being altogether
the best place for a colony made up
exclusively of persons who, in the
bitter cold winters of the noriheast
had been worn out-by the nervous
strain, and reduced to the last stages
of consumption, and who went to the
other extreme. as an. antidote, but
rather for the average human type that
looks for a climate that will prove an.
agreeable rather than an extreme
change to the system, a
Because doctors send‘some of their
patients to-a frostless climate proves
nothing touching the average needs of
a man in ordinary health,
The same doctors donbtless feed
whisky to patients, in the last stages
of typhoid fever, but this does not
prove the fluid good for regular diet,
It is true that not only ‘“‘the most
luscious fruits,’’ but the most luscious
people, ‘‘are grown in practically frostless climates,’’ for there is an intimate
character. The best -average human:
types are produced, not in practically
frostless climates, but in climates best
adapted to the growth of those products of the soil which form the staple
articles of human diet.
Hence, you will find that, where the
best apples and potatoes grow—for
these are of a far more intrinsic value
than the best oranges—will, as a rule, .
sided civilizations.
No better apples and potatoes can
be found anywhere than are raised in
the Sierra Nevada foothills, and when
we add to this list of products, all that
_ the ‘‘frostless” Jands furnish, with
the exception of the extremely. ‘‘luscious’ fruits, that are used less for
muscle, blood and bone building than
for desert, we find that the upper
foothills of Central and Northern California, with their abundance of pure,
soft water, and light snow anJ frost
in winter, are, for our average northern
population, the most desirable lands
on the continent, for health, comfort
‘and loug lite. :
Gen. Stewart Stanley, one of the
best and most scientific of living writers on climate, and who spends much
of his time in Escondido, writes: ‘I
wish, for the sake of health, we bad
more frost in Escondido.” I believe
Escondido to be not only one of « the
most beautiful, but one of the most
healthful towns in all Southern California. Possibly I should have taken
up my residence in Escondido had not
my brother, whose lungs were affected,
spent the winter of 1888 there and
found the sea atmosphere so hard on
him that he grew constantly weaker,
and was obliged to change climates to
avoid death by hemorrhage.
He has spent this winter at Chicago
Park—has improved steadily from they
~-_ first. day_of his.. drrival,.and ca tans Beanies ea
taking charge of extensive trée-planting and pruning, doing a full day’s
work six days in the week at first-class
wages, and considers himeelf a practically well man. And this is one reason why I prefer the climate jof the
Sierra Nevada ‘foothills over that of
Southern California for “invalids.”
[as
NegaRty everybody needs a good
medicine at this season, to purify the

‘purifier. It cures scrofula, all humors,
