M N. Ford, who occupies the house, some three or four children at home and of the children, either in-attempting to ig. this nite a match or by leaving the light in contact with the lining of the house, set it on fire. The room from floor to ceiling ; was soon ablaze. The fire was immediately discovered by Mr. Rosenthal, who gave the alarm, and the flames were extinguished: before the frame of the house took fire. Children’ should never be left alone after dark. The'last fire which oc. cured in this city; bv which a poor family was left homeless, originated in this way. The house on Commercial streetvis located in a thickly settled part of the town, and but for the prompt action of citizens a large fire might have followed. Householders cannot be~ too-careful at this-season of the year. INsANE.—James Poindexter, who has friends residing near Chico, Butte county, was. brought to the County Jail from the lower part of the county a few days since, to be examined on the charge of insanity. He is at times wild and has once or twice torn his bed to pieces anid scattered the parts of his bedsteads about the cell. He has for some time been-engaged in hog driving, and was known as-an-active busi. ness-man. We learn that he has laid up some $1,400 by his industry. Friends are expected from Chico to see him, and unless his condition improves it is probable he will be sent to the Asylum next week. CHINESE SHOOTING SCRAPE.—On Sunday night a row occurred in Chinatown, You Bet, in which a Celestial was seriously wounded. It appears that a Chinaman . . was waylaid by two of his countrymen, one of whom hit him over the head with . aclub and the other fired a shot from a pistol at him. He drew a pistol and fired at ‘his assailants, and the ball passed through the abdomen of one of them.— The shootist was arrested and taken before Judge McGoun at Red Dog. The testi mony showed that he acted on the defense . and he was discharged. GRranpD Sport.—Read the programme of racing for the Fourth of July, to be found in our advertising columns to-day. There will be grand sport for the boys. THE Union says the nominees for Assembly in Sierra are in favor of A. A. Sar& Tae ReLicious MEETINGS.—The religious meetings of Mr. Earle in aie, very largely attended, and a large number of persons have gone forward to be prayed for, We begin to think @ revival is possible, even in Nevada. Hay.—A correspondent writing us from Pleasant Valley, says the late rains did not hurt the hay crop of that locality to the extent supposed. Pleasant Valley— which well deserves its name, both on account of its climate, the beauty of its ladies and urbanity of its gentlemen—has turned out more than an average crop of ® most superior quality of hay.
