Preskrvine—A company hag been organized in San Francisco for the purpose of putting into practice @ process discovered. by a man named Samuels for the hardening and preservation of woods of all kinds. This process has been tested thoroughly and is found to work to a charm. We saw a all the hardness and richness of color belonging to rosewood. The machinery used for this purpose consists of a heavy iron cylinder seventy-four feet in length and four and a half in diameter. Above ‘this is a large tank in which the solution is placed. The wood to be treated is placed in,.the cylinder which-is-airtight and then with a twenty horse engine the airis pumped out. This being done the solution is let into the cylinder and is subjected to a tremendous pressure, causing it to pass into every part of the wood. The work is thus. accomplished. and the wood is ready for use or for polishing. To Justices of Tux PEace.—It is probable that'no Justice of the Peace in this State has entered judgment in a civil suit since the 80th day of March, which’ is valid, On the 80th day of March a law was approved, which materially changetl the practice in civil proceedings in Justice’s courts. This law established new rules governing the notice and appearance of parties to civil actions, and it went into effect immediately after its passage. Nota paper has been served in accordance with its provisions, and it is probable that all civil proceedings before Justices are therefore void. THE Festrvab.—The ladies’ festival on Wednesday night, for the benefit. of the Methodist Church, financially was not @ success, as only about $100 was cleared, but the visitors enjoyed themselves none the less on that account. The theatre was handsomely decorated with festoons and wreaths of évergreens, and the stands were arrayed and trimmed: with gréat tasté by the ladies, They were supplied with fruits, candies, ice cream, boquetts and a large amount of delicacies. The postoffice and grabbag, the unfailing institutions of all We were pleased to notice that none of the guests were urged to spend their money by the ladies; but the stands were )iberally patronized. Any legal voter, or any person who will be a legal voter at the ensuing’ Presidential election, may become a member of this Club by subscribing his name to the following pledge : We the undersigned pledge ourselves to vote for Grant and Colfax for President and Vice President of the United States, at the ensuing election. Duties of Committees—It shall be the duty of the Executive. Committee to procure a suitable place for the meetings of the Club, obtain speakers, and have a general supervision and management of the affairs of the campaign.
