Taxing Church Property. *
The Ohio State Constitutional
Convention has the subject under
consideration. of providing its organlie law for the taxation of church
property, and thus deprive the Lagislature of the power to make dixcriminations in thig respect. -It isalleged
that Ohio has one-tenth of the entire church property of the United
States. A wricer in the Cincinnati
Commercial is authority for the additional statement, that the increase .
in the value of this property is greatly in excess of . the, increasé in the
number ofchurches and church
members. ‘Ale asserts that from: 1850
to 1860, there was an increuse in
ehurch membership of thirty per
cent, while-during the succeeding
_. decade the increase was hardly eleven
per cent. The proposed amendment
to the Constitution is said to be demanded by a very considerable portion of the people of Uhio, In €alifornia, all church property is taxa=
ble under the State Constitution.

Valuable Discovery.
Russia ‘has long enjoyed the monopoly of manufacturing a superior
article of sheet iron, according to a
process which the balance of the
world knew nothing about. The
article has. been made in Siberia,
