NEVADA CITY, CAL. * Wednesday, June 13, 1877, Goop Puace ror Srrrvs.—The Nevada Tanscrrpr. advertises the tvo hundred persons are fed daily at the free soup houses in Virginia City, and hundreds of m@n-are out of employment there. w different affairs are here—no_ destitution, and money on hand in the Treasury of the Nevada City Benevolent Society. How happy we ought to be. The above we copy from the “Suan,” just to show. how much ignorance exists in Colusa County, For the benefit of the “Sun” we would who are receiving the bounty ‘of the soup houses in Virginia City are no more to be classed as “tramps” and ‘stiffs’ than can the unfortunatés residing in Colusa, or any other place. The men who are receiving the’charity of Virginia are persons who have béen thrown out of employment on uccount of the stopping of mines, and: who have not the are willing to work, but none can be had. We advise the editur of the ‘Sun’ to read the report made. by the Bonevolont Sogiety there and. he Will. then arrive at the conclusion that his epithets of ‘‘stiffs’’ and ‘‘tramps’’ are very harsh words to use-towards an unfortunate class of people. Men, women and children are fed daily by the Society there, and wero it.not for the liberality of the citizens they would starve, Don’t slander the poor, for you and yours may some day unfortunately’ be placed in the same position. In publishing our item we desired to call attention to the fact that we had plenty at our very doors, and only a short distance off there were hundreds whowere suffering for the necessaries of life, and soup houses to be happy, and by giving utterance to such an expression Wwe can’t seo ‘how we are ‘‘advertising’’ our town for a regiment of ‘‘tramps’’ and ‘‘stiffs.”” Kar Marks. We aro not certain that Sam Sea-’ bough, formerly of the Sacramento Union, is ® writer on_.the San Francisco Chronicle, but the base charges, lies, slanders, abuse and vilification of the same public-men whona the Union slandered;— lied about and abused, when he was its chief writer, would seem to point that way. Then, too, the style of the filth scattered is the same. Nothing was too base for the writer to say then, andit is the same now. Herun one paper into the ground, andif heis one of the writers on the Chronicle he will perform the same job for that sheet. Page was charged with more crimes then than he isto-day,. and probably by the samo vindictive writer, The Union in its fight ugainst the Republican purty Gu 1872, received the ocratic press of the-State as the Chronicle is now. ‘The Union published the complimextary notices of Democratic journals just as the Chronicle is doing. The readers of the Union became disgasted with its course after they discovered . its motive, just as tho readers of the Chronicle will when its infamy is shown up, as it willbe one -of> these days. The Union used to have its columns filled with correspondence commending its independence and praiseworthy course, all written in its own office, just as the Chronicle has. ‘The Union pretended to have. all the virtue, ability and honesty of the press of the State, just as the Chronicle does, In fact, there is such a’com. plete parallel in the course of -the two papers, that we feel assured the infamous course pursued by the Chronicle is dictated by the same person, When the ass put onthe lion's ‘skin it covered him at all points except his ears. The ears of Sam Seabough or some animal of tle same species certainly is running the Chroxicl?. eee Tux 104-yeat-oldmptber of Moulton of Kittanning, Pacis: subject of as reniarkable rejuvenation esif sho had dipped~in the fubulous fountain of youth, Within the last two years, her hair, which fora long time has been :pure white, has darkened gradually, uutil ithas nearly recovered its original color, ati not only that, but all her meatal faculties have appegred to receive a new impulse, and she cap.read without ~ Local Brevities. Jos, Pettit, formerly’ of the Gold Room, in, this city, is doing the agreeable at the Excliange Hotel bar, at Grass Valley. ~The residence of the Jones Brothers, sitaated on Massachusetts Hill, was destroyed by fire on Saturday Wrestling matches, in Cornish style, will take place at Grass Valleyon the 4th, 5th and 6th of July. , The prizes to be awarded, amount to 3280 Ov, Tho Nevada City Fourth of July celebration will be immense, Everything connected with it is going along lovely. Grass Valley wants a fruit dryer put up in that town. We-want-two or three—there is fruit enough raised around here to keep them _running to their full capacity. ~~ The Democratic primaries take place throughout the county on Saturday, June 23rd. The same day the Republicans wilt have;theirs. Thirty-one candidates. are annotinced in the Transcrrpt for office, subject to the decision of the Republican and Democratic County Con“The political. campaigd promises to be an exciting one, and party lines will be stricfly drawn, judging’ from appearances just now. Mr. G. Cohn, of San Francisco has beenon a visit to his friends in this county. Heis an old timer, and was suddenly closed out of business in this city by the great fire of July 1856. That left him cleaned out, bnt he is now a prosperous cigar manufacturer at Nos.230 and 232 V'ront Street San Francisco, _ Mrs. L. L. Arnhart; who has recently arrived ‘in this city from Woodland, has leased a house on Pine Stroet, between Suspension Bridgo and the Baptist Chergk! wacro she is prepared to do dress taking and pluin sewing. See advertiscment ‘in another column, _ Two more persons were taken to the Napa Insane Asylum yesterday, by Under Sheriff Byrne. One was Mrs, Josephine Pettegienne, aged 29 years, and Mr, William Jeffrey, This makes five persons that have been sent there from this county during the past week, Hooper & Co. have leased the old Wagoner ledge, situated on the Grass Valley road, neur Maltman’s sulphuxets works, for two years, -and are now engaged with a force of men in putting up hoisting works, The New England mine still continues to disgorge ore of a superior grade, The dump pile shows the rock to be filled with sulphurets, and ochre, with a spriuking of free gold. The ledge varies from one to two feet in thickness, and pays better as they go down, exceeding the expeetations ‘of the owners, We have received from the agent, Mrs. Styre, a beautiful edition of the “Life of General George A. Custer,” written by Frederick Whittaker, It is a much finer work than the prospectus gave promise of, is profusely illustrated, und has been evidently most carefully prepared by one who tried to do justice to a friend without at the samo time doing injustice to bistory, The agent is delivering the ‘work to subscribers and receiying new subscriptions, We heard a man complaining yesterday’because one of our citizens seut below and bought some goods, jwhen ha could and should have got them here. ‘*Patronize home stores and then we will be prosperous. Other-towns should rot be built up at the expense of our own,”’ said he. His idea about such matters are correct, but he forgot himself in giving ent to his feelings in that way, The Same person not long ago sent to San Francisco and bed a large lot of printing done which could have been -executed in this city. The shaft, which has been sunk sixtythree feet, is the finest piece of work of thé kind in the county. It has three compartments—one tor pumping and two for hoisting. It is timbered in the most, substantial and workmanlike manner, At sixty feet in depth hitches were cut and heavy bear—timbers-put-in, — From that point the balance of the timbers will be hung-with bolts so as to guard or other obstacles shall be met with, The location of the works is in the wildest possible locality.
