* ay! % Published Daily, Mondays Excepted, BROWN & CALKINS. SATURDAY JUNE 14,-1884. ee County Licenses. The Supreme Court of California have rendered a decision in regard to the power of the Board of Supervisors to license businegs and {collect license taxes within their respective counties. The question came up on an Appeal from Los Angeles County, and the power of the board to establish a system of licenses and to provide for their collection has been sustained. The main question raised was whether the act of March, 14th, 1883, which gives that power to the Board of Supervisors, is in conflict with sec. 5 Art, XL. of the constitution of the State, and the majority of the Supreme Court have decided that it is not. Justice McKee gave a dissenting opinion in which McKinstry joined wherein they hold that the Board of Supervisors exceeded their power in passing the ordinance referred to. The main ground alleged for holding the act ~ anauthorized is, that. a license tax collector for a County is a County Officer and that there is no authority for the Board of Supervisors to create » County Officer, or to provide for the election or appointment of an officer to fill the office, as that power belongs to the legislature alone. However.a majority of the Supreme Court thought the other way, and their decision ought to set the matter at rest. The question has agitated the people of this county to some extent, and it may be of interest to them to know that the authority of the board to establish and collect such licenses has been upheld. _——O be A WAREWELL mission of three weeks is in progress by Moody and ‘Sankey in an iron tabernacle on the Thames embankment: in.
