The Daily Transcript, WEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA, 4 v } The Committee of Eleven Report Progress—A Breeze Between Lawyer Cross and Officcr Scott—Some Ru siness-Like Addresses. Tuesday, June FSth, 1880. —— More Shot-gun Argument. On Saturday dJast Jacob Miller went to the house of August Adnet, son Rush creek, near Indian Flat, and . j¢, fired at him with a shot-gun, Oue shot entered Adnot’s lip, and the remainder missed him. Miller is stated .to have then reloaded and chased his victim about the ranch for thé pur_pose of ‘getting another . oportunity A large number of citizens , assem. bled at the Theatre Saturday evening to hear the reportof the Committee of Eleven. The meeting was called to order . by Hon. Niles Seals, the regular: Chairman, who stated % . He believed that Chimatown should be removed if possible, . adding that all things were possible ‘with God, and most things with the: American people. Leonard S. Calkins was Secretary pro tem. The existence of houses of ill fame where school children ‘Were compelled to pass daily and witness infamous sights constituteda much greaterevil than that of the Chinese settlement, It was for the fathers and brothers of the young. to say whether this . curse should not be wiped oat to a great extent. Mr. Preston's remarks were botir eloquent 40d conyincing. The resolutions-were unanimously carried. In adjourning the snasting, Judge Searls said: ‘I hope each citizen will constitute bimself a committeeof one to help combat these enemies. of social and -moral-progress. Millet was arrested, brought to this city, -and: ‘by Judge Rabinson bound over to appear next Sacurday for examination on a charge of assault to murder “There are two reports as to the origin “of the fracas. One is that Adnot had been in the habit of abusing Miller’s children by stoning them, and the other that the men. are counter-claimants toa piece’ of mining ground, It is said. that Miller has heretofore been regarded ‘The reports suhmitted by the committee were the same as determined upon previously, and an account of ewhich appeared in Sue’ ast tesae: of ‘the TRANSCR PT. : 'C. They are obtaining much valuable information regarding he Various properties, visiting the \mines and claims for themselves instead of velying upon mere report to gov their —opinions. They are-much pleased with the prospects here, and ‘their conclusions wall ‘doubtless be of great benefit to the community, not only because they will invest some of theirown -capital, but will bring their influence to’ bear in get. ting other patties i in the East to do likewise. “They are firm friends to legitimate mining enterprises, and it is such men the community wants. “Whe Deadly Pistol. Sunday afterncon at the Derbec Shaft in Bloomfield townsni Pete Maloney shot a man named Frank Conners, and it is believed the result will be fatal. The reports of the af-. fray that have been brought down are rather confused, but from careful enquiry ‘we learn that Conners had for some time been spoiling for a fight. Hehad some words with. Maloney, who is a sporting man, about a gamo, and: was warned ‘several times to go away. He persisted in dogging him, when finally Maloney drew a pistol and shot him twice, one ball taking effect in his “arm and the other ia his body, It is believed thewounded ma. will die, — Grass Valley Items. Mr. Scott said that some means should be devised to prevent the Chinese from settling around in various parts of the city, as they would probably attempt to do when they found they could not rebuil2 in the burnt district. : L.
