a \ “Nv SN @pened and the voting commenced: -Sargent " tittees of every county where a Convention _ til the little boy crossed the score with the ‘ranged and is very appropriately named— Glotidus Victory «. . FRIDAY, JUNE 16, 1865. A LiveLy 8ceve.—A little “affair” came esterday mérning, soon after the polls aed im this city. , It will be rememCounty ‘Central Committee t to bé administered at the primaries, -This test permitted ail who vo-ted4for Lincoln and Johnson at the last election, and allwho were willing to support the nominees of the County Convention to vote. Early yesterday morning the “Short gan to growl, contending that the Inspec_.tor had no right td-administer-an—oath,and-. _ District Attorney Hawley notified parties . that the thing must nut be done. The polls ‘was challenged, swore and voted. .Kent and Hawley offered to vote, were challenged, and swore they would’nt swear. Then the fun commenced Harry Sears, rushing to ithe rescue, declared that it was aguinst the law for the-Inspector to swear anybody.—_ The “Shorts” swore they would apen ef election of their own. They concluded: that “*would’nt do,” and then they declared they would oust Inspector A. H. Hanson and put in somebody who would let men vote without pledges. Sears took a position in the amiddle of the street and culled to all in fa-} vor of that move to get on the other side. The Kent men all wentover. They did not change the Inspector, but concluded to “change their base.” One of their mien who thought discretion the “better part of valof,” took # position on the curb, and proclaimed that they would “fight it out on this line now and some other one ut another time.” They managed however to swallow the test oath, and then went to voting, swearing and growhng. continuing thustillevening. The enly objection that-a man could have to tak. dag the oath prescribed by the Central Com1 talttee is, that it will compel him to support the Univa ticket or break an oath. Itia the same test prescribed by the Central Comhas yet been held or called. The Sargent men took the test as willingly as they would have taken strawberries and. creas. Weonespay’s Ravixu.~Tho racing at the Glenbrook Park on Wednesday lust 1s pronounced by all wh witnessed the sport to be the best contest that ever came off on the turf of this State. ‘The track isin splendid condition, and-a comparison of the time made yesterday with that over aoy other course in the State will prove without-exceptiva that it is the fastest. ‘The contestants for the purse were J. B. James’ b h. Pilot, J. A. Merritt's s. h Finnegan and T. White's bik m, Jenny Hull The race was the best three in five and was won .n three . straight heats by Pilot. For each heat the little bay nag bad to get down to his work. During a greater part of the race the black mare was lapping him, and Finuegin, a sorrel, four year vld, mnintained his relative position throughout the race. The brush on the home stretch each time was very exciting and the spectators were on “tip-toe” unother horses close upon him. The time was 1:49, 1:46§, 1:47. Such racing is. hard to beat and we understand ‘that the owner of Pilut proposes to throw down the glove to the State. This meeting is bound to give the Gleabrook Park a State reputation, and before long it will become the favorite resort of racing men. Charley Osborn deserves the greatest credit for the energy and enterprise he has shown in making the track what it is, and he should be liberally patronized by citizena of this county. There will. be and sport at the track to-day and every" should see it. , TAK Saloon of Messrs. Haglett & Van Aulstine was thrown open to the public on “Wednesday evening and a large number collected to drink the bealth of the new firm jo a glass of sparkling champagne. The Saloon has’ been neatly and tastefully ar. “The Gem.” We wish the new proprietors abundant success. Tue Moxxvge Docruine iN Missovut. Meetings of great. interest,.and attended largely, have been held at St. Louis for the Purpose of adopting measures for aiding Mexico. Eloquent addresses were made and received with applause. A colonization society was formed and officers elected — There had been two of these mass meetings, and the last one, held May 9th, adjourned till next evening. Thus the spirit of the nation is rising.” ; VINDICATED ! “AND ENDORSED FOR THE United States Senate CITLENS OF NEVADA COUNTY Long Hairs saved, Short Hairs Cleaned, SARGENT’S éozrse approved !
