FRIDAY MORNING, JUNE 17th.
FOR PRESIDENT,
—_
oe
(OR VICE PRESIDENT.
ANOREW JOHNSON.
= jexffiae Democeacy.—What has become of
creed. There was a time when it could
“ marshal foe a campaign the mighty met
of the nation. But the day of its glory be-.
gan te grow dim in the administration of
Franklin Pitree, and its suo forever set
whens James Buchanan was elevated to the
Presidential chair, Sinee that time the
_ Creed of that once al party has become
demoralized. When patriots found that traitora to the Government bad contre! of the
party, they abandoned it. The only thing
left ia the party whieh was common with it
in the days of ita glory, was a desire to
feed at the public crib. Now, with the lat~.
ter day Democracy, or the copperheads, the
only pointe upon which they agree are hostility to the Government, a bitter hatred for the
Administrativn and a lively sympathy for
Jeff. Davis and hia Confederacy. Upon the
platiorms they quarrel with one another.—
Theit papers in this State, whenever they
discuss a question of poliéy, get into a snarl,
But they all agree in their abuse of the
“ Abolitionists,” and the Press sounds the
key note, when the Express and the entire
copperhead press take up the howl. They
prate about. a Jove for the Constitution.—
Had they been its only protectors during
the.last three years we should now have

“which makes them wondrous kind.” In
the campaign of ’56 Fremont was detested
by them, and until he wus remoted from the
Department of Missouri they heaped their
abuse upon him. He was removed by the
~ Goverowent for ineapacity and corruption,
aod almost immediately after he is made a
Bera by the copperbeads. The men by whom
Freniont has been made a pliant toul, have
made a platform calculated to conciliate the
coppetheads, and the sympathisers with
treason are now engaged in puffing the
“path finder;”’ not because they like Fres
mont, but beesuse they hupe by exalting
him to disorganize and weaken the Un'on .
party. Their motives are plain to Union
men, and their efforts to distract the party
will be without success. We do not know
of'a single man in the county, a member of .
the Union party, who favors the election of
Fremont, and when the contest comes, un* less he is nominated by the copperheads, he
won't be 10 the fight.
TaaT Srappine AFFain.—The Grasa
Valley National of yesterday, gives a different version of the affray at that place from
what we published. It says the following
facts were elicited at the examinatian: A
man vamed Hart, who is a cripple, and . .
White were having a friendly scuffle in the
saloon of Curtis, on Mill street, when
Fogarty interfered, remarking that “White
should net injurea cripple.” Angry words
followed between Fogarty and White, whereupon the latter traversed the saloon, Fogarty
stepping backward, and telling White that
if he (W.) did not let him (defendant) alone,
that be (Fogarty) would kilt White: Short.
ly after thie Fogarty left the house; was
gone about fifteen minutes, when he returned to the saloon, and the difficulty recowmenced between him and White. They
clinched and fell, Fogarty being on top; and
while in this position F. made a motion as
if resching for a weapon. A bystander
named Donahue, interfered at this stage of
affairs, telling Fogarty not to draw a weapon
on White. Both Fogarty and White svon
afterward leit the saloon, and stood on the
sidewalk, While ue was urging
Fogarty to leave, White stepped from behind
Donshue, Fogarty the meanwhile facing
Donahue. The latter does not know which
of the parties struck firet, but he saw them
clinched, and also saw White falling from the
sidewalk to the street, followed by Fogarty.
Ina moment afterward, White said that be
had been stabbed, and he then went inte
Curtia’ saloon. The wound, which appears
to have been inflicted with a pair of tailors
shears, is immediately above the groin, left
side, and is pro by Dr. Tyrrell, the
tending » 8 critical stab. White

and out of health generally, giad to have an

subject.
The mining section in Little York township offers superior indueement to laborers,
as it is one of* the best mining sections in
this part of the country. Already there are
four mills in successful operation, and we .
are told that two more will commence running in about two weeks; these will increase
the demand fur laborers. The owners of
clains ia—that-section are pushing shead,
for they receive ample reward for so doing,
in thoroughly prospecting the ground which
has ‘heretofore remained untouched. Al]
the cluims they have done any work on havepaid uncommonly well, and it offers great in~
