UNION _TICKET.
fs ‘FOR PRESIDENT, _
‘GENERAL ULYSSES 8. GRANT
‘For Vice President,
_ SCHUYLER COLFAX,Time SuPrnacs Question.—Hadthe
power of making @ platform for the Un_ ton party been given to Democrats, they .
-would undoubtedly have committed the }party. in favor of Negro and Chinese suf. ¢rats speak aad write of the P. orm
_ ‘would indicate that our o te claim
thetight not only to what the
principles of the party are, but
creme
tenets which they have ascribed to Republicans—they set up men of straw
atid then knock them down under the
ay Impression that they are fighting an
_. Opponent, This is their course upon
the suffrage question. They can point
to no measure of the party: by which
tn the States, and thé platform ‘airestly
‘ahd unequivocally declares that the
regulation of the right of suffrage belongs to the States and not to the general government. . This is the position
__ Of the Republican party on the suffrage
question and it is fally understood by
every loyal man as well as by every
reading Democrat. ‘The election of
Grant and Colfax will not effect in any
manner whatever the suffrage question.
“The position of the Union party on this
< question is that which has been agcept_, @d by all parties during the history of
the government, and the matter is left
within the States as it bas always been
‘dn the past. But our friends need not
think that the Democrats are going i in
” Cuffee has been their “battle poe in
~ the’past and Democrats are in deadly
fear that he will become their equal—
"Phe. “nigger””isthe “beogaboo” that
Democratic leaders have to frighten
their ignorant partizis into the traces.
He has been thus far effective for this
purpose and will not be abandoned now,
_. because he is the last and best hold of
Democracy. A thorough Democrat
-ould no more talk politics ten minutes
if there were no“‘niggers” than he could
live without breath. This is the great
reason why they insist upon making
Republican platiorms. On reading it
_ they find that the suffrage question is
left to the several States to regulate
for themselves. “They then turn from
the platform to the leaders of the party
and say, “some of the Republican leaders advocate impartial suffrage and we'll
charge it to the party.” These fellows
forget that Deniocratic leaders as well
as Democratic journals dre in the same
* position, and every man knows that
‘there is a vast difference between indi~~ vidual opinion and party creed. If the
ey party is to be so judged, we are justified
in saying that ‘because Brick Pomeroy
"and other Democrats eulogise Booth,
that the assassination of Lincoln was a
party measure. If Democratic logic
‘applies they should have the full benefit of it and must abide its conclusions.
We apprehend, “however, that people
will not be deceived. The Union party
record is plain and the declarations of
their platform are clear. Every man
may A soak for himself ae understand
exactly the position of the party upon
the suffrage question. .

THR New York Sun gives a brief
statement why the ineome tax is unconprovides that all direct taxes shall be
levied upon the States in pro
portion to their’ population. Congress
has no power to levy any direct tax
upon individual eitizens, and must impose such taxes upon the States and
upon theni only. The income tax is a
direct tat; it is levied not upon the
States but upon individuals, and therefore it is unconstitutional, and cannot
rightfully be collected of any man.”

A Hienu OLp J uRyY.—On Sasantay
last, says the Grass Valley Union, the
jury in the Recorder's Court failed to
agree on a verdict in the case of Alexander Robbins, charged with violating
Ordinance No. 14. A bottle of whisky
and a deck of cards found their way
into the jury room, and that legal body . c
consulted those articles more closely
than they canvassed the case of the de fendant. Recorder Taylor kept them
together for» long time, and when the
whisky had died dut in them, proceeded
to levy fines for contempt of court, and
then discharged them. A little fun is
well enough now and then, but we can
see no propriety in jurymen who are
sworn to do justice, making themselves
obnoxious to courts by such conduct.
There were some few on this jury who
behaved as men'should.
GRANT THE SoOLDIER.—The Call
which probably considers itself qualified to make a continent or demolish a
world by its criticisms, undertakes. to {
prove that Grant is no soldier as follows:
“Grant has never given evidence
that he. could have-won-the battle of
Gettysburg as Meade did; that he
could have done as well as Rosecrans
did jn the Stone River battle ;:that he
could have marched through med
as Sherman did; or that he could
and manage a campaign as well as Halleck did.”
‘We do tot propose here to prove that
Grant is @ great General because eyen
his opponents who are honest admit
that, bat simply quote in order to show
the kind of argument used by Democrats to disprove his generalship, Why
did not the Call continue and say that
“Grant never proved that he could
have won the battle of New Orleans as
Jackson did, and therefore he is no
great shakesas aGeneral?” Verily the
Call ought to have a patent for its new
