reduction of liquor licenses, and license
for ‘billiard tables; also, a protest
against a'teduction; The matter was
discussed at length, and a motion to
fix liquor licetse at $7 50, and billiard
table license at $3 per quarter, was rejected—aye 1, noes 2..
On motion, ordered that the Mar-.
shal be’ instrueted to notify «property
owners to repair sidewalks and the
street planking in front. of their. lots,
where such repairs are needed.
A’ éommunication was laid before
the Board from the invitation committee inviting the Board to participate as
a body’in'the Fourth of July celebration at-GrassValley. It appearing
_ that three members of the Board. would
be unable to attend, the Clerk was in<
structed to potilg the committes that
it would not be §onvenient to accept
the invitation.

Social Statistics. .
The Ceneus Marshals of this county.
have reevived the blanks to be filled
up, giving the social statistics. The
statistics to de collected under this
head inclade the trae valuation of real
and’ personal property of the county ;
debt and debts of the towns ; the rates
of taxation for State, county and town
purposes; the number of paupers, 'native and foreign; the nuwber. of crim”
inals convicted during the year; the
libraries, including public, private,
church, Sunday school, and the number of volumes in each ; colleges, academies and schools, with the average
number of teachers and pupils; newspapers and periodicals, their character,
how often published, and average circulation; charch organizations and
churchedifices, with the number which
those of each denomination will accommodate, and the total value of
church property. The average wages
per month of farm laborers, hired by
the year, with and without board ; the
wages per day of laborers and carpenters, and the average wages per week
of female “domestics, are also to be
given. , ,
Fairand Festival.
The Fair and Festival given by the
ladies of the Methodist Episcopal Society closed out on Thursday evening,
and Was in every respect # success.
The ladies request us to express their
heartiest thanks for the ample assistance efforded them, andthe services
were 60 complete and efficient that they
scarcely kaow where to begin or end
in their expression of gratitude. They
are under lasting obligations to the
Nevada Choral Society, to the musicians, to the friends in charge of the
tableaux; to the earnest co-operation of
the young folks, and to the people generally, for the valuable and material

Mr: Stoddard, teacher of the San
past, bas resigned his. position, and
leaves to-day for the Eastern States.
‘He has been an efficient, first class
teacher, and his departure is much regtetted by the titizens of North San
Juan, where he has. been so long emtployed. He goes East for the purpose
of studying dentistry, either in the
city Water Works.
The City Fathers yesterday went
out to the reservoirs at thé head of the’
city water works, to take a view of the
improvements, and also to obtain information as to the necessity and pelicy of enlarging the capacity of the
pipes. The cost of putting in larger
pipes has. ‘not "been ‘ascertained, and
the guardians of the city have not as
yet arrived at any conclasion. on the
subject.

Closing Exercises,
The closing exercises of the school of
Misses Edwards and Palmer took place
yesterday afternoon, and consisted in
readings, recitations, singing, etc, The
pupils of this school are all young, but
have made good progress in their
studies, and acquitted themselves remarkably well for their ages: There
will be a vacation for some’ weeks,
when the school will again open.

Geological Survey.
Mr. Bowman, of the State Geological
surveying corps, arrived in town yesterday. His branch of the business is
to make a survey and map of the lava
. deposits; the gravel ranges, and the an-. table
cient river channels, as far as the same

Mcuntain, in Meadow Lake District.
