them and ever only at is uire, ack$1. 4c. $1. $2. 3.50. ‘0. in all roporure: Mas. Frank Youne of this city the latter part of last week received the sad intelligence that her mother,. , who resides in Sacramento, was so ill that the physicians feared eho could not recover. Mrs, Young immediately went to her parent’s bedside and will remain there until a change occurs for better or for worse. Prov. R.-H.-.Srrercn, of San Francisco, the eminent civil engineer and scientist, has been in town for more than a week past studying up the natural history of this part of the State. He is tramping over the mountains and through the canyone for miles around making important and interesting diecoveries daily. ee I memceneecet Mrs. Geo. F. Gray leaves to-day for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to visit her aged-father and mother who are fast descending the hill of life. It is twenty-three years since Mrs. Gray last visited her old Eastern home, She expects to be absent six weeks or two months, Cuartes Grimes goes to San Francisco to-day to select a large and fine stock of goods for the store of Hyman Brothers. Mr. Grimes says he will got the biggest and best assortment ever brought to town by the firm. . Tur Tidings ssys: Patrick Riley has completed his business arrangemente with the Omsha Mining Company and purchased the mill from the company. Ler every person bear thie in mind—If you want to see your town grow and prosper, patronize your home business houses. Oe Mrs, Gro. W. Smira and daughters ‘have gone to Santa Clara county to live, They have settled in or near San Jose. Mrs, D. F. Sroven has gone to Gibsonville, Sierra county, on a visit to her daughter, Mrs, Gourley. Mrs. B, Buntarp left on yesterday morning’s train for San Francisco. fn . A Distinguished Visitor, G. F. Allardt, whose astounding statements as a witness for the anti-miners in some of the debris cases have rade other civil engineers in the land wonder whether he did not know any better or was only trying to see howsgullible the courts and lawyers are,is ie” town. We presume that Mr, Allardt is getting testimony to be used in the Bear River slickens case. If that be so, he may by staying long enough find a certan hydraulic claim that is running day and night and witha twenty inch stream of water discharging 4,000,000 cubic yards of debris into Deer creek every 24 hours. His statement that he has discovered such an instance would be no more surprising to us than eome of the things he testified to asthe “expert” witness of the anti-miners. Damaging the Trees. The City Board of Education Committee on School Buildings has filed with usa complaint that the mulberry trees planted in the yard of Washington school house at considerable expense are being damaged by persons who go there to get leaves . for silkworms, They not only strip off the leaves (which is not objectionable we believe when properly and carefully done) but they break off whole limbs and branches and carry “them away. The committee say they will hereafter prosecute any person or persons who are de tected in thus disfiguring the trees. i ed aa a Tue One Price San Fransisco Store has received another big bankrupt stock consisting of clothing, dry goods, and boots and shoes, and he claims that he can undersell anybody in the county, He is going to stay here, and don’t you forget it. tf OE Re Pustic auction at Casper's from 8 till 9:30 o’clock Saturday night. L, Whittle, is well written, For the rest, the number is of great variety. A paper by Mr. Lodise Chandler on the life and works of Arthur O'Shaughnessy, the Irish poet, who, though dying at an early age, left behind him some admirable. verse, has his portrait well engraved. An illustrated paper on ‘‘The Ancient Water Supply of Constantinople” is readable, and a second instalment of John Bernard’s ‘‘Retrospections of the American Stage” is full of welltold anecdotes and as amusing as the firat instalment. Timely is a paper on ‘White Elephants,” by Frank Vincent, Jr., who derides the idea of Barnum having imported a white elephant. J, Parker Norris, of Philadelphia, the well-known Shakespearean scholar and collector, strongly urges the opening of Shakespeare’s grave, Another instalment of Trajan” much increases the interest of the new novel, and there ie a humorous short story, ‘‘Plain Fishing,” by Frank R. Stockton in his best vein. Among the poets are Ella Wheeler, Thomas 8, Collier, Mrs. S. M. B. Piatt, George Edgar Montgomery, S. M. Peck and H, OC, Faulkner. The number closes with a droll picture of an Ideal Fourth of July, showing an old fellow asleep ina hammock and some urchins about setting off some firecrackers under him. There seems likely» to be music in the air when he wakes. LE sch cag gh ae ag A Hot Day 4head. The grapevine telegraph Jine was kept busy yesterday bringing in m-ssages from weather sharps all over the county to the effect that owners of thermometers ehould pack the same in ice before the sun gets up this morning, for itis to be the hottest day of the season, Yesterday was not a cold day, for that matter, The sun beat straight down on the earth which is moist from the late storms, and a.sort of steam rose ap towards the azure vaults of heaven. Nobody claimed to have seen the clouds of steam, but so many said they were there that it would have been waste of time to dispute the assertion, Such weather immediately after cold storms, we are told is not very good for the health; but it isan ill wind that blows nobody good, and the ice cream vendors are beaming with smiles, Se eananatdtieesetneammemmmmmnnnl Committed to Stockton. Mrs. Pasquale Pelligrini, who is the mother of four children and whose husband i isa miner in Grass Valley district, was brought to the county jail Tuesday night and locked up on a charge of insanity. Yerterday she was examined by Drs. Hunt and Jones, pronounced crazy and committed by Judge Caldwell to the Asylum at Stockton, where she has already been sent two or three times before. Tuesday night about nine o'clock asa young son of M. D, Calkins was going into a closet in his father’s house (24 miles north of town) with a lighted lamp in his hand, the lamp fell and was broken. The oil spread over the floor and catching fire soon communicated the flames toa curtain and adjoining woodwork. The fad had a narrow escape, getting out of the way just in time to save himself from-being. burned. Mr. Calkins wasin ao adjoining room and escaped from the building through a ‘window, saving two or three family pictures and a little bedding before hedid so, Neighbors came to the scene, and assisted in saving some of the outbuildings. The house was burned to the ground, and the furniture, clothing and sewing machine were all destroyed. The loss is a severe one, bat would be worse were it not that the property is partially insured in the London and Northwestern Fire Insurance Co, They Meet the Issue. Hyman Brothers announce their platform in another column of today’s Transcript, and the careful attention of the public is directed to it, The store at the corner of Broad and Pine streets is but one of a series of establishments (mostly wholesale) owned by the same firm and located in various parts of the world. [he local manager, Mr, Grimes, gives notice that the public here can hereafter obtain from him goods at wholesale rates, which will be duly appreciated by those in need of clothing, gentlemen’s furnishing goods etc., etc, Hyman Brothers mean business, and the people are invited to call at their store and test the sincerity of their claims. 2 BS On Afummer Feast. Mrs, Breed & Leddy yesterday treated the Transcrirt force to ice cream of the splendid quality served to the public at their establishment on Commercial street. It was made of the purest cream, richly flavored, and frozen to just exactly the right consistency. The coming of the hot wave hascreated a market for ice cream and these ladies will receive a large share of the patronage.
