That investigation can go on just as well without as with the indorsemeng of Coutty Conventions, If. Sargent is guilty of all he is charged with, the people will not want him to represent them. and proves Limself so, there will be “such-a-reaction io his favor that no ¢ombination will be able to defeat his ‘election. Frank Fisher, one of Sargent’s appointees at San Francisco, was once a barber in this county. To be sure it was a long time ago, butstill he was a barber. A man whe earned his living by shaving people. Was not the*act of appointing sucha ‘plébian, a mudsill, one of the common horde, @nough to damn Sargent n the’minds of all well-to-do people? To think that such a scrub: of a man who once cut hair for grub is now at work forthe Government. We don’t know buat the low fellow does bis work welt enough, is bonest. and competent, at least the ‘‘Chronicle” brings no, charges ayainst him on that score. It only goes after the more important one of his having once been a barber. He was a common laborer, and a barber at that. What right bas a man of that character to accept a position under the Government? Grant disgraced the Government almost as bad. He was ‘nothing but a dirty tanner and dealerin hides once, Has the times jegenerated so much that people will stand so mueh degradation,. There is at-least one sentinel who wilL give a timely warning, and he is a-writer on the San Francisco ‘‘Chronicle.” Sargent might have survived other attacks, but this libor business will fix him. The Mechanics’ Fair. The Industrial Fair of the Mechanfos’ Institute, which is to open in August next, will be one of grand proportions and interest, and the preparations for it are being made Upon a liberal scale by the managers. They ignore the duty of Grand Juries, and devide for thent iw advance on questions not before them. Men who know one of them—A. A. Oglesbie of San Luis Obispo—say he is a professional dead-beat, and is. as thoroughly worthless as his unheard of communication indicates him to behim, ~The Reeord-Union puts all three up right, in an—article from . which we quote the following: ‘‘The disgraceful character of their communications is enhanced by the reflection—which amounts to a cortainty ~—that they were moved to this by their apprehension of the scurrilons. concern whose friendship they seek to gain by toadying to it in this revolting fashion. It is, however, time to ask how long this intolerable . imposture is to be endured, and how scoundrels to shake theni by the throat at pleasure, When we find District Attorneys so forgetful of their-duties, and so fearful of calumny, that they will rather risk the impeachment*of their manhood than proceed in disregard of. a_notorious blackmail -newspaper, . the fact is evidence that this abominable system of slander and detraction has been permitted ‘to go a great deal further than a regard for the public interest would warrant, and that it must be summarily put a stop to, before the people lose patience, and perhaps take the work into their own hands ina rough way. When Dist trict Attorneys affably assure a professional libeler that he is perfectly safe from all retaliation intheir county, and that in effect they are prepared to act as his agent, and to secure him from the legal consequences of his slanders, we think most people will agree th t the ques+ ion of the rights of the people dea The U. Lieutenant Wheeler, of the United States Engineer Corps, gives the following particulars of the work accomplished on this Coast during the past year, and of the projected work, The Survey comprises the country lying between the British possessions on the north, the bounary line of Mexico onthe south, the Pacific Ocean on the west, and the meridian ‘of 100 degrees on the east. The work so far completed includes the survey of about two-thirds of Arizona, nearly the whole of Nevada Colorado.’ Thee extension of the Southern Pacific Railroad to Yuma’ has offered such additional fucilities to the survey party that the survey of “Arizona will be rapidly carried on and soon completed. The survey of the Nevada mining district is especially valuable, as it.is intended that the maps published shall show the workings of the different mines A special sheet of the San Jaun mining djstrict has been finished on which delineated.
