In strippivg the bed rock in the cement clay, alead of ribbon quartz, encased in slate, and fourteen, inches in width was found. In a selid mass of hard quartz, several pieces of washgold were found imbedded: ‘The gold is worn smooth by the action of water and the pieces are worth fram two to four bits exch. Other particles of gold are found in the rock which are like quartz gold.— The only ground upon which we can aecount fur, this 18, that when the fissura in} which the quartz is now found was beibg . filled, and befere the quariz became hardened or crystalized these pieces of wash . _ gold fell from the face of the channel, which rests upon the bed-rock and became encased. This theory does not agree with the ove that quartz veins are the original sourcé from which gold comes. The geologists who hold the latter theory will fiad it difficat to explain the existence of the wash gold in solid quartz. CEMENT IN Livre YoRK.—In the claiins of Pond and Remington, at Little York, the cement channel on the Blue Lead has been struck, and di:t of exceeding richness has been found.” The mill was erected upon these cliims some nine months since. For about eight months a tuone! was run paraliel with the channel, and at some points it passed within from two to four feet of pay dirt. A few weeks ago the direction of the tunnel was changed, and a few feet brought them’to rich cement. A single pan bas yielded seventy-six dollars, and after a run of two days last week, they cleaned up nine hundred and ninety dullars. The gold is Covrse’ and is worth about $19 50 per ouace, They have nuw the channel opened fifty feet wide and nive feet deep. » These claims will rival the celebrated mine of Neese & West in richness. THE AMERICAN CLAIMS.—The American claims located near Sebastapol, Bridgeport township, are among the best in the county, But 4 short tine since the heavy blast of 310 kegs of powder was discharged, and thousands of tons of gravel and earth loosened. : The last run of this company netted $8; Jin the sluices. The gray sand common to the claims on the Ridge, yielded $800 more atter being ground in Crall’s waltzing pan. rs Crall is one of the owners of this claim, atid. the inventor of one of the best pans in@se. “Lhe American Company are building an excellentynill, for the purpese of working the cement io their claims. i Tue YELLOW Diamonp.—The Yellow Diamond Ledge, owned by Reagan & Cv., is located on Rock Ravine, near Rush Creek. They have a tunnel in on the ledye forty feet, with backs of about twenty. feet. Eight tons of ruck trom this ledge crushed at Palmer's mill paid $2250 per ton. DEATH.—A dispatch was received in this city, yesterday, by Dr. W. G. Alban, from Virginia city, sunvuncing the death of U.S. Gregory. .Our readers are doubtless aware that although Mr. Gregory was 73 years of age, yet he was in the enjoyment of good health and was jailur at Virginia c¢ity.— Some three wecks ago he was attacked by two prisoners whw were in jail, and received wounds which buve c.used.his death. Mr. Gregory was at one time Marshal of this city. and for several years a Constable in this towoehip, and always gave the best sutisfaction in his-official business. His many friends in this community sadly deplore his death. Canvasstne.—Josi:b Fuller, agent: for . . the Pacific Coast Directory, tobe publishdd enor about the letof August. by Henry G.
