Daily Transcript everenen : emmammmammnatai Wednesday ‘It is probable fhat the Democratic Convention, Rew assembled at Sacramento, will adépt the ‘‘New Departure’’ platform, after the nomination of Haight. The principles of the Governor ar@ Bo accommodating that he can convettiently stand upon any platform, or for that matter, any two platforms that maybe made. He is eminently fitted for a New Departure policy, as may be demonstrated from his record: He has been Republican and Democrat, subsidy and anti-subsidy, Sunday law and anti-Sunday law, Coolie and anti-Coolie, a pillar of the éhureh and a promoter of gambling, and he has even carried his hypoericy to the grave, manifesting it to the world by a false inscription upon the Burnett monument. Who says he won’t do for a New Departure platform, or anything else that may be concocted for him to stand upon. Before the campaign is ended we rather think the party friends of Haight will wish he had taken a ‘‘new departure’ long -since, and followed his message to. Cuba or some other place. , Jung 21, 1871. ss i all Thunder Showers. The climate of California seems to he changing. __It used to be said that thunder storms were unknown or of very rare occurrence. During the present month this locality has been visited by two or three such storms, two of them accompanied by rain enough to lay the dust. On Monday night the shower was quite heavy, and we learn that the storm extended as far east as the summit. It may be that the clearing of timber, the culti. vation of land and the changes made. on the surface by mining operations are producing thanges in the climate of the country, we Fighting. The late heated term, or something else, has had the effect of warming the blood of the honr@res in this locality. _Duritig the past two days, several lively fights have occurred.— Yesterday and the day before Broad atreetwas the ‘‘seat-ofwar.’’.Fortunately for the contestants, no serious damage has resulted. The Appeal. The Marysville Appeal, containing full telegraphic dispatches from the East and the Pacific coast, market reports, etc., is received in this city four hours ahead of any other paper published out of the county. The «lppeal is a good paper aiid worthy of support. Car Broke Loose. A few days since a car ‘‘got away’’ on the incline at the Pittsburg mine. The car had on about 1,000 pounds of rock, and it knoeked out timbers and did some damage, but fortunately no one was hurt. Probate Matters. George W. Baldwin applied for the appointment of guardian for Sarah W. Bolton, on the ground of extreme old age, which disqualifies her for the care of property. Hearing set for July 5th. He also made application for letters of administration in the estate of Alfred Bolton, deceased. Accident. Yesterday morning a cave occurred at the Banner mine by which J. Kerick was caught and considerably bruised. It was thought that his thigh was fractured, but Dr. Hunt who was called, found that it was only severely bruised. Committed to Jail. ‘Santiago alias James Payne, was lodged in. the county jail on Monday last, under sentence of thirty days imprisonment, for stealing $23 worth of gold dust from Jacob Smith at Rough and Ready. Naturalized. The following persons were admitted to citizenship in the District Court. on Monday: John Scobal, James Champion and Joshua Liddell, natives of England, and Joseph Leme and E. Guivard, natives of France. _ oe Se Military Drill. ‘The Nevada Light Guard will meet on Saturday night for street drill.— All members'of the Company should be on hand. The ordered drill appointed for last Saturday night is postponed to that time, Tar recent “weather in othe Western States ’ gat down the stra shipments to a €X. stamps. Another Concert. We learn that an effort will be fiven by the ladies bw Episcopal Chureb repeated, for the benefit of the Nevada Benevolent Society. Buch ay entertainment is eertaiply worthy of patrotmge, tind the object is worthy of aid. The Society is, short of funds, and we hope such aii . effort will be made. The Fourth. The General Committee met yesterday and A. Goldsmith was chosen temporary Chairman. The several committees reported progress in their respective works, Everything is going on smartly and there isa prospect of a grand celebration. Declarations. Joseph Antone Frienwalder and Peter Bolla, natives of Switzerland, yesterday declared their intention of becoming citizens of the United States. NS ceans Vary Irems.—We clip the following from the Grass Valley Union of: yesterday: The works of the Dartmouth Co. They have atenstamp mill, purchased from the Dromedary Company, on the ground ready to be put up, anda tramway about completed for running out the gravel to the mill through a tunnel they have commenced running into Alta Hill. In early days a tunnel, known as the Cleaveland tunnel, wasrun some distance into the hill but a short distance from that now being started, but for some reason unknown to us, me abandoned, The late developments on. The settled character of the company’s claim for richness of yield, will, doubtless, cause the increased number of shares to be readily taken up. Constable Melbourne, of Rough and Ready, passed through town yesterday, with a man named Santiago; alias James Payne, arrested for stealing from the store of J, Smith, of that place, $23 in gold dust. He plead guilty before Judge McFarland gave up the greater portion of the dust, and was sent up for thirty days to board out his offence at the expense of the county. SrncuaR FREAK oF a Hen.—The Marysville Appeal says: Mr. Cadwallader, of Birchville, Nevada county, is the owner of a singular minded hen. A short time since this hen made a nest in the backend of the lot, some little distance from the house. A mountain quail, feeling socially inclined, came and joined forces with her, laying her little eggs along with those of the hen. Considering that the exposed place where the nest was made was not exactly the place for Biddy to raise her young brood in, she was removed with her eggs to the vicinity of the dwelling. Soon she escaped from her coop, and returned to the old nest, which still contained the quail eggs. Before this it seems that she had been friendly with the quail, but now all friendship was broken, With afew blows of her beak she killed the quail, took possession of the nest and eggs, nor did she relinquish it until she had hatched out a brood of quails, which she is now rearing. Tue SupREME JuDGEsHrp.—We are informed says the Sacramento. Record that Hon. Judge A. C. THE Boston Journal says that the Hartford and Erie railroad between Putnam and Willimantic will be completed, and cars running by the Ist ef August and from Willimantic to New Haven early in the fall. Seems as if we had heard of such predictions not of a violent type. THERE are two or three hundred cases of small pox in Newark and the local papers think there will be more unless the Board of Health shall display greater efficiency than it has so far done.
