NEVADA CITY, CAL.
You Can't Prove It.
We recently heard a good story on
Haight and his anti-subsidy professions: .A contraband, who was a
great cern eater, bet one of his friends
$10 he could eat twenty ears of green
corn, The money was put up and}
the test made. Sambo niade away
with eighteen and stuck on the next
one, losing his bet. On being jeered
by the bystanders, he exclaimed:—
‘‘Neber mind, you can’t prove dis
nigger don’t like corn, if he didn’t
‘eat dem last two ears.’’ So with
Haight, he signed eighteen subsidy
bills and stuck on two. Now the
Democracy are trying to prove ‘‘dat
nigger don’t like corn.”
A Grand Scheme.
In the present number of the TranSCRIPT will be found the Louisville,
Ky., Gift Concert, announced for
Oct. 31st, under the management of
Charles R. Peters, late principal business manager of the Mercantile Library of this State. There are 721
to $550,000 to be distributed, the
largest being $100,000, the next $50,000, and the next $25,000. The lowest gift is $100, and the prizes are to
be paid in currency. The full tickets are $10 each, having four cousold is 100,000. The scheme is indorsed by leading citizens and officers in Kentucky, as will be seen by
a glance at the list of names of Trustees and Supervisors.
Cooling Them Down.
VU Thé Nevada Ice Company, of this
county, ig cooling off the people of
this State. Every day they are making shipments of forty tons of ice
from their establishment at Boca.—
This goes into the markets of Sacramento, Stockton, San Francisco, San
Jose and down the coast, to reduce
the temperature of water and other
The markets of. this county are supplied from their houses at. Blue Tent.
The managers are accommodating,
and do everything in their power to
to accommodate the public and keep
people “cool” at small costs. Orders left at the office, corner Boulder
and Main streets, will receive prompt
atténtion, and ice is delivered at the
residences.
The Cosmopolitan Scheme,
The Cosmopolitan scheme is proving a grand success. Now the time
of drawing is near at hand the demand for tickets is immense, from
all parts of the United States. Get
your tickets immediately is our advice to all. It will be well remembered that when this Society gave
their first Fair, tickets commanded a
premium of from 50°cents to $150
for weeks before the drawing took
place. If you don’t want to pay a
premium for tickets, go and buy at
once.
} Dentistry.
“ The card of Dr. R. W. Sterling,
surgeon dentist of Grass Valley, will
be found in to-day’s Transcript. Dr.
Sterling is prepared to do all kinds
of work in the best style and ready to
guarantee a good fit. He has all the
latest improved instruments, and is
ready to give the best satisfaction as
to price and work. See his card.

t The Sidewalks.
The sidewalks in some places in
the city are in a terrible condition,
and nails project from a half to three
quarters of an inch above the planks
in some places. A few strokes of a
hammer would save the ladies, who
have occasion to pass over such
places, many stitches, as well asa
great deal of annoyance.
iy / Decorations.
It has been suggested that cltizens
of Nevada decorate the streets and
ornament their buildings for the
Fourth of July. We think that if
the committee visit our citizens, so
as to have it understood that this
will be-done, and the place will look
gay on the Fourth.
Accident.
John Hanly got his hand caught
in the machinery at the Banner mill,
8 few days ago, and three of his fingers were badly mashed.
~ Lancaster & Robinson lost a valuable young horse a day or two ago,
from the effects of hard driving.—j
Mike Byrne, of Grass Valley, lost
one from the same cause.
Valuable Hints.. -..
A regular ‘habit of body ib absc essential to physical Health and clearness of
intellect. Nor is this all. Beauty of person cannot co-exist with an unnatural condition of the bowels. A free passage of the
refuse matter of the system through these
natural waste pipes, is as necessary to the
purity of the body as the free passage of the
offal of a.city through its sewers is necesary
to the health of its inhabitants.
Indigestion is the primary cause of most
of the diseases of the discharging organs,
and one of its most common results is constipation. This complaint, besides being
dangerous in itself, has many disageeable
concomitants, such as an unpleasant breath,
a sallow skin, contaminating blood and bile,
hemorrhoids, headache, loss of memory and
general debility,
Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters remove all
these evils by removing their immediate
cause in the gees organs, and regutlatiug the action of the intestines. The combination of properties in this celebrated
preparation is one of its chief merits. It is
not merely a stimulant or tonic, or an antibilious agent, or a nervine, or a blood depurent, or a cathartic, but all these curative
elements sucely blended in one
ful restorative. It lends activity and vigor
to the inert and enervated stomach, relieves
the alimentary canal of its obstruction, and
gives tone to the membrane which lines it,
gently stimulates the liver, braces the-nerves
and cheers the animal spirits. No other
remedy possesses such a variety of hygienic virtues. It is to these characteristics
that it owes its prestage as a household medicine. Experience has proved that it is as
harmless as it is efficacious, and hence it is
as popular with the weaker sex as with the
stronger.
Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters are sold in
bottles only, and the trade-mark blown in
the glass and engraved on the label, is ,the
test of genuineness.
Beware of counterfeits.
PAIN KILLER,
PERRY DAVIS & SON,
PROVIDENCE, R. I.,
PROPRIETORS,
1840. 1871.
The “ Paty KILtER ” may justly be styled
the great medicine of the world, for there
is no region of the globe into which it has
not found its way, and been largely used
and highly prized. Moreover, there is no
clime to which it has not proved to be well
adapted for the cure of 4 considerable variety of diseases; it isa speedy and safe
-Femedy for burns, scalds, cuts, bruises,
wounds, and various other injuries, as well
as for dysentery, diarrhma, and bowel complaints generally, it is admirably suited for
every race of men on the face of the globe.
It isa very significant fact, that notwithstanding the long period of ycars that the
‘Pain Killer” has been beivre the world,
it has nevcr lost one whit of its popularity,
but, on the contrary, the call for it has
steadily increased from its first discovery‘
and at no previous time has the demand for
it been so great, or the quantity made been
so large, as to-day.
Another significant fact is, that nowhere
has the Pain Killer ever been in higher repute, or been more generally used by faamiat home, where it was first discovered and
introduced. That the Pain Killer will continue to be, what’ we have styled it, THE
GREAT MEDICINE OF THE WORLD, there can
not be the shadow of a doubt.—{ Providence
