ACTS LOUDER THAN WORDS.
’ Drift miners are in no danger from
the farmers, The hydraulic miners
cause all the damage complained of.
—Marysville Appeal.
The Appeal does not speak from
‘the record. The first case ever
brought—it being begun July 29th,
1876—by the anti-miners, was that
of Keyes vs. Little York and others,
the Carney ‘& Goodspeed and the
Knight drift mines being among the
defendants. The plaintiff won in
the Superior Court, but the Supreme
Court reverted the judgment on
the ground of misjoinder of parties
defendant. Now last but not least
comes farmer Kennedy and asks that
the Ruby’ drift nine be enjoined
from Operation heréafter 20 that the
water of the creek into which the
Ruby tailings are dumped shall flow
by the Kennedy ranch in its natural
purity. The anti-miners. may continue to protest that they. find fault
with hydraulic mining only, but the
fact that. they bring suits to enjoin
drift mines from being worked gives
the lie to their words. Their words
are as. the velvet on a tiger's paw,
but their déeds are the claws that
~we have felt too often'to forget the
existenve of.
Tue people of Paterson, N. J., do
‘ not know what to make of a clergy:
man named Guiry, now settled in
their midst. He went from Cailfornia with a‘ quantity of mining stock
which he wanted to sell; and failing
a _ totind a purchaser, accepted the pas“orate of a church. He now appeals
to. the. congregation for aid in
behalf of his family, who, he says,
, are starving in Oakland’; but as he
is in receipt of $125 a motith, they
cannot understand the reason for the
distress. Perhaps they would have
found out if they had * sogrse his
mining stock.
Frank Cuamusrs, the young woman who has been masquerading 60
long in-male attire, was fined $50.by
Justice Kaufman in Chicago, ‘and
will have to work out the penalty in
Bridewell. For the first time since
her arrest Frank showed her feminine nature by dropping a few . womanly tears when she heard the sentence, :
In consequence of the anticipated
effect of the Illingis high-license law
and the passage of the ordiuance by
the City Council, there was @-rush
Tuesday at Chicage:to obtain saloon
licenses. During the day 1,500 were
issued, andjit ig thought 2,000 more
were be applied for Wednesday.
THE cases. ayawmst Frank Jamés
for murder, inconnection with the
Gallatin Bank robbery, fourteen
years ago, and the Winstead robbery
in 188], were called at Gallatin, Mo.,
on the 19th, and upon application of
the defense were continued until
August 20th.
At New York a jury have declared John Gill unfit to take care of
himself,or his property, The Woodhull sisters, who, it is said, obtained
from him a quantity of Government
bonds and a deed toa $13,000 house,
are said to have escaped to Europe.

Miss Burier, the young lady involved in the Borden-Jenks homicide
at Mansfield, La., eays; through her
father, that she did not tell Jenks
anything from which he ought to
have inferred that she had been ruined by: Borden.
N. F, Muvgr, aged 20,. who committed suicide in New_York Satur' day evening, in a fit ofdepression,
left a paper on which was written
‘Love's labor lost,” and requested
his parents tobe commanicated with.
Tux body of Isaac Lehman, one of
the two cousins, and succeasful but—ten--makers, who so mysteriously
disappeared from New York at the
beginning of the present year, was
found in North river.
‘Freogricx Layton, a pork packer of wealth, has determined to build
an art'gallery in Milwaukee at a coat
of $100;000 and present it to the
city. “‘There'will be’ no conditions
attached to the gift. \
Joun Devo was sentenced to sixty days itpprisonment in the _ penitentiary for publishing a libel on August Belmont, Ina speech he again
severely denounced Belmont.

when the fire department reached the scene the two upper stories

“. ground ‘floor was the mammoth dry
goods store of O’Connor & Moffitt,
and although the upper three stories
were gutted, the fire did not penetrate here, but the entire stock, valuid at $400,000 was aamaged to the
amount of $100,000; insured for
$260,000. The second floor was oseupied by the Acme Billiard Parlors,
just opened at a cost of $10,000; insured for $5,000, Edward Kalland

was badly damaged by water; also
Etingers & Co.’s fringes in the same
building. The building was the old
Morton House, and was bought by
Eward Barron in 1878 and remodel
ed forthe Olympic Club, which
spent $40,000 in furnishing it. It
was one of the finest athletic clubrooms in the word. The Club was
insured for $10,000. The members
lost abont $5,000. in clothing, etc,
Edward Harris, the colored steward
of the club, discovered -the fire and
had to fly from the building in his
night clothes. The building has
cost in all about $180,000, was. valued at $125,000, and heavily insured.
It was the heaviest fire in San Francisco for years.

A Marysvit_x dispatch of Tuesday evening says: The flood in the
Yuba subsided last night, and to-day
the water was at about the same
stage as ‘before the reservoir broke.
A cabin that had been standing ten
years on the south bank of the Yuba
about five miles above the town, was
swept away and broken up when the
flood came yesterday. There was no
one in it at the time. The Linda
levee broke in two places and the
roads and green fields in « portion of
that township were under water today. The damage to crops is variously estimated, .

Tue London Truth says the Queen
for the last two months has been in
a state of mild melancholy which;
in course of time’ if not relieved, will
probably become very difficult to
treat. Her condition naturally
causes great anxiety, because of the
tendencies of her family.. Her Majeaty and Princess Beatrice will, in
the Autumn, go to the vicinity of
Florence, Italy, where they will repain two months, :
Tue Daily Report says: ‘The
Stockton papers are calmly discussing whether it would be murder tohang Commissioners Carpenter and
Humphreys. The same levelheaded
and law-abiding journalists suggested
a few weeks ago théemployment of
dynamite in the settlement of the
railroad _ problem, . Yet we . send
missionaries to China.”
