NEVADA CITY, CALs
LOCAL AFFAIRS,
Election of Delegates.
A large and enthusiastic meeting
of the Republicans of North San Juan
was held at the Hall of Union Hose
Co, No. 2, on Saturday evening last,
for the purpose of electing delegates
to the County Conventiun and to
form a Republican Club for the pre~~ cinct. The meeting was organized
by electing Simon Furth Chairman
and James A. Stidger Secretary. O.
P. Stidger, of, the County Central
Committee, stated the object of the
meeting in a few wéll timed remarks, and moved that the meeting
first proceed to the organization of a
Club for the precinct. After con-sidering the subject it was laid on
the table, and the meeting proceeded
to the election of delegates to the
County Convention. The following
persons were chosen by acclamation:
Doctor E. B. Harris, A. J. Putnam,
George C. Spooner and Wm. H. Hatfield. A resolution was adopted, declaring that Hon. Newton Booth was
the first choice of the Republicans of
San Juan for Governor, and Hon.
A. A. Sargent for Congress. The
delegates are not instructéd.
: San Juan slighted.
A letter from San Juan, dated June
20th, says: ‘‘We had a little rain
here last night, very littie indeed, only a few large drops. We had however plenty of lightning, but that so
far off no damage was done hereabouts. If the just and the unjust are
to have an equal quantity of this deJectable article meted out to them, as
promised, I can’t see why we, just
should be passed over and the unjust
should be so highly favored. This is
in my opinion unconstitutional.—
Where is Gov. Haight with his veto?”
Accident.
A correspondent writing from San
Juan informs us that on Monday last
Jerry Harrington was thrown from a
horse near Sebastopol, Bridgeport
township, and that his right arm was
dislocated at the elbow by the fall.—
He was brought to San Juan and Dr.
Asay set the arm.
From Nevada County.
Coughlan, who has been nominated by the Republicans of the
Third District for Congress, formerly
resided at Brush Creek, a short distance from this city. Coughlan left
here some fifteen years ago. He
was quite a boy then, and, we believe,
went to act as a page in the Legislature.
/; Disgusted.
vA Yesterday some of the Sierra delegates passed through this city on their
way home. When asked why they
did not remain until the nominations
were made, they replied that Haight
was running everything, and there
was nothing for them to do in SacTamento.
; Visiting Home.
Capt. William ‘Thomas and wife,
left this city yesterday for a visit to
his home in England. Thomas isan
old resident of Gold Flat and has a
large number of warm friends.
Mining Sale.
J The Pennsylvania mine near this
city, has been sold by J. H. Helm
for $45,000 to a San Francisco Company. A year ago this mine was unworked, but since Helm took charge
of it, it has been opened and been
yielding handsomely. It is good
property.
Surprise Party.
J Yesterday morning Dr. A. Chapman
and wife, were surprised at their
ranch, a short distance from town,
by a party of friends. Chapman's
ranch is one of the most beautiful
places in this locality, and the fruit
is ahead of anything in the State.—
The party had a jolly time.
The Fourth at Grass Valley.
In to-day’s paper will be found the
announcement of the Grand Masquerade Ball, to be given at the conclusion of the celebration at Grass
Valley on the Fourth of J uly, in Concert Hall. The hall is very large and
there will be a good time.
J 2 :
Hon, E. W. Roberts has accepted
the invitation to deliver the Fourth
of July oration at Grass Valley,
Another Sale,
We lear that Nichols & Co, have
sold their claims at Montezuma Hill,
for $10,000.
The Last Chance—Great_ Rush—Improve It.
It does not realty seem possible
that such extraordinary inducements
can be offered to the people of Nevada county, as are being made at the
present time by Banner Brothers, of.
this eity, yet such is the fact, and it
behooves all our people, both in this
locality as well as in distant parts of
the county, to take advantage of the
favorable opportunity now presented
to “them. In San Francisco clothing is sold at a very high figure, as
well as in New York, and within the
last month, all woolen goods have advanced from 10 to 20 per cent., owing
tothe failure in the wool clip. Yet
in the mountains of California, in
the city of Nevada, where heavy
freights are to be added, everything
in the clothing line is sold at 100 per
cent. cheaper than in the above
places. It does seem unaccountable,
nevertheless it is true, and the cause
of it can be easily explained. The
well known firm of Banner Bros., on
the corner of Broad and Pine streets,
who have the largest and most beautiful stock of goods ever seen in a
clothing establishment in the State,
are selling off their stock for the
purpose of engaging in business eélsewhere, and are offering their clothing
so cheap that it surprises everybody.
Among the goods which will be sold
at extraordinary bargains, are fine
broadcloth dress’ suits; beaver suits,
cassimere suits, linen suits, white
duck suits, and every other kind and
quality to be had. ‘They have also a
large assortment of hats, of every
style and description, shirts, gloves,
trunks, valises, boots and shoes.—
Their furnishing department for gentlemen cannot be excelled anywhere.
Banner Brothers are determined to
close business in Nevada city, and
the very low prices at which they are
selling goods, is good evidence that
they mean. what they say., During
the past ten years, this firm have enjoyed the good will of all who have
had dealings with them, and their
goods and prices have always given
the best satisfaction. Merchants in
the clothing business at San Juan,
Moore's Flat, North Bloomfield, You
Bet, and in fact everywhere else in
the mountains, by calling on Banner
Brothers, will do much —better~ by
selecting from their immense. stock
than by going to San Francisco for
supplies. Such opportunities to save
money seldom occur, and the ple
of Nevada county should not fail to
take advantage of the present one.
Valuable Hints.
A regular habit of body is absolutely essential to physical health and clearness of
intellect. Nor is this all. Beauty of per60n cannot co-exist with an unnatural condition of the bowels. A free passage of the
refuse matter of the system through these
natural waste pipes, is as necessary to the
purity of the body as the free passage of the
offal of a city through its sewers is necesary
to the health of its inhabitants,
Indigestion is the primary cause of most
of the diseases of the discharging organs,
and one of its most common results is constipation. This complaint, besides being
dangerous in itself, has many disageeable
concomitants, such as an unpleasant breath,
a sallow skin, contaminating blood and bile,
hemorrhoids, headache, loss of memory and
general debility.
Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters remove all
these evils by removing their immediate
cause in the digestive organs, and regulatiug the action of the intestines. The combination of properties in this celebrated
preparation is one of its chief merits. It is
not merely a stimulant or tonic, or an antibilious agent, or a nervine, or a blood de. purent, or a cathartic, but all these curative
elements judiciously blended in one powerful restorative. It lends activity and vigor
. to the inert and enervated stomach, relieves
the alimentary canal of its obstruction, and
gives tone to the membrane which lines it,
gently stimulates the liver, braces the nerves
and cheers the animal spirits. No other
remedy possesses such a variety of hygienic virtues. It. is to these’ characteristics
that it owes its prestage as a household medicine. Experience has proved that it is as
harmless as it is efficacious, and hence it is
as popular with the weaker sex as with the
stronger.
Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters are sold in
bottles only, and the trade-mark blown in
the glass and engraved on the label, is ,the
test of genuineness.
Beware of counterfeits.
PAIN KILLER.
PERRY DAVIS & SON,
PROVIDENCE, RB. L.,
PROPRIETORS.
1840. 1871.
The “ Parw Krier” may justly be styled
the great medicine of the world, for there
is no region of the globe into which it has
not found its way, and been largely used
and highly prized. Moreover, theré is no
clime to which it has not proved to be well
adapted for the cure of a considerable variety of diseases; it isa speedy and safe
remedy for burns, scalds, cuts, bruises,
wounds, and varieusother injuries, as well
as for dysentery, diarrhoea, and bowel complaints generally, it is admirably suited for
every race of men on the face of the globe.
It a a ee notwithstanding t.
it been so great, or quantity made béen
#o large, as to-day : ;
Another si fact is, that nowhere
has the Pain ever been in higher reGEEAT MEDICINE OF THE WORLD, there
not be the shadow ofa doubt.--[ Providence
