Tunnel from England to France.
The “project 0f a tunnel between
England and France id now the subject of-inquiry by o parliamentary
committee. It is agreed that there
are no engineering difficulties which.
cannot be readily overcome, The
tunnel can be finished in six years
at a cost of thirty millions of dollars,
ten millions less than the earlier es-,
timates. The distance under the
sea is twenty-one miles and the approaches on each side will increase
the entire length to nearly thirty
miles. Sir John Harkshaw, the enand freight traffic would easily pay
a dividend of six per oe on the-entire cost of the tunnel, allowing forty per cent of the gross receipts for
working expenses, ‘The only obstaprise is the nervous timidity of the
Englishmen, including peers and,
statesmen, soldiers and journalists,
that a crafty enemy might take advantage of this route for the conquest
of Britain. This fear seems perfectly silly, for nothing would be
essier than to provide means for
flooding the tunnel‘ at a moment's
warning. Of course, an invading
force large enough to be formidable
could not be gottogether for the
conquest of England in a few minutes, nor witrout attracting some attention from the thousands of travelers who will be passing every day.
A short canal from the sea level to
the line of the tunnel, with gates under the control of a British officer
under order from the wer department
would afford means of sealing up the
tunnel, making as absolutely safe
against an enemy as if no pathway
under the sea had been made, The
flooding of the tunnel would not be
of a very expensive nature. Seventy
or a hundred million gallons of water
would fill it, and that amount could
easily be pumped out and the tunnel
cleared again for teaffic in ten
days.
An Old Mine.
The Virginia Enterprise tells about
amine that has been found in the
mountains near Salsburg, Austria,
which gives indications of having
been occupied and abandoned at
Iéast 2,000 years ago. It contains a
large and confused mass of timbers,
which were used for support, and a
number of miners’ implements. The
timbers were notched and sharpened,
but were subject to inundation, and
left in confused heaps. The implements were mainly wooden shovels,
ax-handles, etc. Among the relics,
also, was a basket of untanned rawhide, a piece of cloth woven of coarse
wool, the fiber of which is even, and
still in good preservation and a torch
bound together with flax fiber. The
probabilities are that the ancient salt
miners were overtaken by the flooding of the mine, as mummified bodies have been discovered, also. The
find seems to have belonged to the
pre-Roman times; the ax handles
were evidently used for bronze axes,
specimens of which have been found
upon the surface of the mountains.
The relics are of high order, the basket being superior eveto some that
were used in the early historic times;
