question of negro suffrage has no more beuring in this contest than has the question of
a telegraph to the moon. Copperheads
have been trying for several months to force
this issue into the present canvas, and in
the few sore-heads of thigcuunty who affect

Touch. NoT THE UNCLEAN “pare. _
We warn Union men of the county tovhave
nothing todo with the Convention whichis
called to meet in this city on the first of July, under the pretence of representing the
people. Three or four defeated candidates
have gotten up a call for this “People’s
Union County Convention.” Theironly object is to break up the Union party in this
county because they could not rule it. They
wanted office, and bécause they did not receive the nominations they will not stand. it.
Every growl has emanated from the few
defeated candidates who have united in this
Let every Union man stand: aloof
from these disorganizers. ‘They are in the
interests of the enemy and are working for
the defeat of the Union party.
Rev. D. A. Dayoen, of this city, has accepted the invitation to deliver an Oration
at North San Juan on the Fourth of July.—
The citizens of that place are furtunate in
securing so good and talented a gentleman
as Mr. Dryden. We learn every preparation has been made for a‘grand time.
Rev. P. L. Haynes, of North San Juan,
will deliver the oration at Downieville.
Rev. David Deul is to deliver an Oration
at Colusa, °*
INCREASING.—The Mongolian population
of this county has had largé acquisitions
during the past few days. Every stage
brings an additional installment. The,, fellows look as though they had just arrived
from the “Flowery Kingdom.” An agent
usually meets them at the stage, and as‘soon
as they are landed they strike for China' town, gabbling like a gang of turkeye.
ACCIDENT.—We unedestand that A. Coe,
who is at work upon a mill at Guadulupe,
in Little York township, received a painful
injury yesterday. A man working with him
was driving a peg with a sledge, which flew
off the helve, falling about eighty feet and
striking Coe upon the back of the head. His
head was badly cut but he was not dangerously injured.
Tue BALt at Bean VaLLey.—We learn
that the ball given by E. O. Tompkins, at
Bear Valley, on Thursday night was a grand
seccess. A large number were in attendance from Dutch Flat and Nevada. Everybody enjoyed the dance hugely and ‘lompkin’s place is spoken of as the pleasantest
resort in the mountains.
Tue Forrtu at Grass VALLEY.—The
Committee of Arrangements at Grass Valley are busily engaged in making preparations for the celebration of the Fourth at
that place. Everything is being done to
~ make it one of the largest gatherings and .
most successful celebrations ever held in this
county.”
SICKNESS amoxG CHiLpREN.—At this
time there is scarcely a family in this community whose children are not sick with a
a kind of influenza, which has prevailed for
a week or more. -There are also many
cases of this unpleasant sickness among
grown persons. . ‘
—_—
Tae SuLTana Disasrer.—The military
Court Martial appuiated to investigate this
“matter has ascertuined that there were on
the steamer at the time of the explosion
2,021 persons, of whom about 800 were saved. The Court, in its finding, makes no
mention of torpedoes, but says: ‘The cause
of the explosion, from the evidence, was by
