COUNTY and CITY OFFICIAL PRESS.
SUNDAY, JUNE 24, 1866.

Tue Fourta or Juty.—The commit%ee of arrangements met*on Friday night:
They determined to purchase a cannon ’for
ring a salute on the Fourth of July. They
elected A. Haas Treasurer and appointed
-B.F. Spence, A. H. Hanson and J. C. Palmer auditing committee. All expenditures
for the celebration are to be audited by the
oommittee and orders drawn upon the treasurer by the Secretary forthe amounts.—
The committee also made the follewing appointments of Marshal and Ajds. Chief
Marshal—I, Williamson. Aids—A. H, Hanson and John Cashin, Nevada; Dr. Wm.
McCormick and C. A. Clark, Grass Valley ;
I. Av Walling, Rough & Ready; J. E.
Squites, Little York. ‘I'he committee are
‘rapidly-perfeeting their plans, and in a day
or two the fall programme will be issued.
The Fire Companies are overhauling their
uoiforms and beautifying their apparatus.— .
The Light Guard has appointed a comniittee, consisting of Capt. Lancaster, Lieut.
Deal, Sergeant Alex. Gault, and J. B.
McChesuey, to make arrangements’ for the
reception and éntertainment of the visiting
military. All citizens. and organizations of
_ the town are working‘in harmony, and we
see nothing to prevent the celebration of the
Fourth from being the best ever held in the
“County.
‘A ‘Great COMBINATION ‘Lock.—-We
‘were shown by Mr. Turner a very ingenious
and effective combination lock; which has
three thousand three hundred and seventy.
tive combinations. These changes are ef.
fected by the key without any movement of
the machinery of the-lock. which is simple
and not liable to get out of order. It is
impossible to pick the lock or get an impression for a false key, and even shuuld the key
be obtained the lock cannet be opened unless the key is sét precisely as the one
which locked it. Mr. Turner has the ageney for this county and will canvass for the
sale of the lock. Any one who desires to
ace this curious piece of mechanism, can do
so by calling on Turner. at the National
Exchange.
THe Masonic CELEBRATION.—A grand
celebration of St. John’s day, by the Masonic fraternity of this county, will take place
in this city to-murrow. The Grass Valley
and San Juan Lodge will be largely represented. A grand procession will take place
at 11 o’clock, under the marshalship of Ike. .
Williamson. After marching through the
principal streets, the procession will halt: at
the Theatre, where interesting exercises
will be had. he oration will be delivered
by H. H. Hartley of Sacramento, excellent
amusie will be furnished by the Washington
Band, and in the evening a grand ball will
be given at Tempernnce Hall,,

Luscious.—We are indebted to Chapman & Briggs, for a large lot of the most
delicious. raspberries. ‘Téy have any
amount of them left, and sell them “‘chenp
for cash.” They. have also an abundance of
almost every kind of fruit, and a very large
_ and extensive assortment of candies. Call
and see them, at their stand on Pine street,
New STore.—M. Rosenburg &. Bro. advertise in today’s TRANSCRIPT, that they
have opened anew Dry Goods’ Store, on
Commercial street, opposite A. Lademan’s,
and will sell guods as cheap.as any house.in
the county.
A Nuccet.—A chunk of gold was found
in Bensley & Co's claims, on Kentucky
Flat, on Friday, worth $297.
‘Dr. Anorew’s Fiyina Suip.—The
New York. Herald. May 26th, gives an account of an experimental trip of this new
ship, for sailing in the air. ‘The ascension
was made by four gentlemen, officers of the
Aerial Company. At first the ship refused Was laid on Sunday, the 10th inst, in honor
to obey the helm, but finally got under way
and sailed off at the rate of a mile in three
minutes. The machine worked so well as
to give ussurance of success. After sdme
improvements are made in the ship she will
make another trial trip.
ANOTHER WarninG ‘to PARENTS.—A
little-oay, Frank Derrick. son of M. L.
Derrick, of San Francisco, died at San F'rancisco, from the effects of eating phosphorus
off of matches, ~ j ,

Tne HEART AxD Bratn.—For the pure
pose of showing that the heart could continue to beat in the abscence of the brain,
Brodie employed artificial respiration on
animals who had been decapitated, or whose
brain had by other means been destroyed.
By the regular action ofa pair of ;
pipe,.air could be driven in and out of the.
chest ina way simulating ordinary respiration.
tinued to beat, the muscles of the limbs and
trunk te contract when stimulated, the
bleod-to be changed from a venous te an
arterial color in its passage through the
lungs; in fact, except there was no consciousness, ne~-voltntary movement, and
apparently no secretion, the animal machine
seemed to be perfurming the same functions
as during life. According to the theory of
Black, the respiratien, the change of the
blood froma venous to arterial character
in the lungs, being in such a cage still carried
on, animal heat ought also to have been gen=
erated, and. consequently, the insufllated
corpse ought to have maintained its-patural .
temperature as long as artificial respiration
was continued. Brodie, however, found
that it gradwally but persistently became
cooler. Nay more, when two rabbits of the
same size, breed and color were killed, and
the one left untouched, while the other was
insdfflated, the latter always cooled the most
rapidly, Tor the obvious reason that in its
case a certain amount of cool air was at frequent intervals brought into contact with
the warm interior of the animal: He moreover obtained the same results when he refrained from mechanically destroying the
brain, and merely suspended its action by a
narcotic poison; and, with the help of
Brandt, demonstrated that not only did the
blood appear to the eye to undergo in the
lungs the usual change fron the venous te
the arterial condition, but also that the
amount of carbonic acid given off by the
animal during the artificial respiration, to no
extent differed from that proper to life and
health. He drew trom his experiments the
veonclusion that animal health was in no direct way connected with respiration; that
by respiration no (he afterward changed the
“no”’ for ‘‘little’”’) heat wes generated, but
the sole condition and source of the elevated
warm-blooded ~ creatures
was the integrity and functional activity of
the brain and nervous system.
