sae $16 651. 756. ty i ed The Daily Cransry 2 . . & NEVADA SITY, ake : eee alle me Wednesday. June ‘24th, “1874. the' oigdaae Business: The San Francisco Alta, in Monday's issue, gives‘the rerultjof a ' “week's investigation into the iquor business of that city: By--its-inquiries it’ ag‘convinced itself that local _ option in that city would be. detri“ mental tothe best interests of the _ dity-and State, and by the publication of the same expects, we presume, to convince ‘its readers of the same fact. Ithas discovered that i 662 arepaie for tbe salaries of emz ~ployees. That 80,140,787 pounds of barley and other grain is used in the taanufacture of the different. kinds of beer and liquors, . Phat*'to grow _ the same 83,479 acres of land are re_ quired. That there is paid to travéling.agents for expensés in the interion, $2,500,000. That there is — paid i in revenue to the United States, the State_ and county, ‘$1,337,486. It is of the opitiionthe syrup business’ would be compelled "te~elose. That in this business there is $300,000 invested, and that the annual trade is $400,000. It also believes —~—-theglass works —will--eloser-Fhey have $100,000 invested,.and emiploy about 140 men. The rent paid yearly_bysdloon keepers in the city ‘Vand sand from the Manzanita Mine, Phat $19, SBR Tor: the “different precincts of the township. The discussion is becom-. ee saw an account of the number of . =4.horses there now und their recorded /get away with most of the, prises. . ‘amounts to $2,306,000. There are . ~qnany Other figures given, from which . the Alta -cencludes that ruination . would overtake the city, should local . option prevail in San Francisco. ‘The figures are appalling in their magnitude, aud the reswits to that particular line of business would-no doubt be ruingus. But while that may be the ease, there can be arguments deduced from thesame figures that would be as convincing to the friends of the law in favor’ of its passage. That so much money is invested ia bnsiness, and™that se much is annually expended by the people for a thing whichdoes no good, and is acknowledged to do much harm, is a stunning argument. in favor of lessening the expenditure and the evil. So far as the passage . of the law in San Francisco is converned, there ia but little danger of it, for there is:too much power and influence opposed to it. The defeat -of the law, however, will not depend -uponthe injury it would work to the interests 6f.those engaged in the business, so much.as in the love of dissipation and revelry possessed by the residents of that city. There is too much money-gathered in from country customers who make a raise, and gu there to squander it, to make many-of the business men favor the ~ measure. The law may be put in force in other places, but we believe it will never be in San Franciseg. \ of Giant Powder Accident. * At Graniteville, or Eureka South, ‘situated in the upper part of this county, a serious accident happened yesterday morning, Stephen Fowler, a former resident of this place, had occasion to cuta cartridge of Giant Powder, and to do so he nsed an axe. He placed the cartridge on a piece of timber and atruck it a blow, An explosion occurred and Fowler ‘was badly injured. His left hand was torn from the wrist, leaving only the little finger bunging by the skin. His left knee cap was injured by a pieve of gravel or stone striking it and going through.it, and it is probable that both eyes are so. injured that he will entirely lose his “ssight, ‘There are some other and slight bruises about the legs and face. His injuries are not necessirily fatal, theugh they are very severe, The pow which exploded __ was of the kind known ‘as “Number Two." There must have-been gravel or a nail on the titiber on >which . © the cartridge was cut, and an exphoc sive spark of fire caused the explo. sion of the powder, Fowler~was brought to this. place ie and ‘was taken. to Dr, Tomkin’s Office where his wounds were dressed. The wound__#d-than bas been a highly esteemed — citizen of this place’ for many years and has_th ‘sythpathy of all who ever knew him irhis great misfortune.
