NEVADA CITY,«CABa:) "
LOCAL AFFAIRS.
Speaking of John M. Coghlan,
Republican candidate for Congress
in the Third Disirict, the Vallejo, Recorder says: Mr. Coghlan is a native
of Kentucky, and 37 years of age.
He came to California in 1850. at the
age of sixteen, and he has grown up
with the State. _He was engaged in
mining in Nevada county for eight
years, and during that time he commenced the study of the law in the
office of Judge T. B. McFarland. In
1858 he went to Napa county, where
-he.worked on a farm for a few years,
and during his leisure he continued
in his legal studies at home. Removing to Napa City, he was appointed United States Assistant Assessor, and was soon admitted to the
bar of the Supreme Court. In 1865
he was elected to the Assembly from
Napa and Lake counties, leading his
ticket by many votes, and during the
session he acquired-a brilliant reputation for industry, ability, and exact
knowledge of parliamentary law,—
Two years afterward he was unanimously nominated for the State Senate in an overwhelming Democratic
District—Napa, Lake and Mendocino—and although defeated, he led
the rest of the Republican candidates
nearly four hundred votes; 1n1868
he removed to Suisun, where he formeda law partnership with William
5. Wells, and he has won for himself
anenviable reputation as a ‘successful advocate. During the last Presidential election he devoted two
months to the canvass of the State,
and his voice was heard on the stump,
in favor of Grant and Colfax, inmany
counties of California.

Masonic Meeting.
The Hall of the Masonic Lodge
in this city was crowded on Friday
“night, nearly every; Lodge in the
county being represented. The
meeting was called in consequénce
of the Grand Master of the State,
, Leonidas . Pratt, Grand Lecturer
haffer, and Grand Secretary Abell
making an official visit to this jurisdiction. After the meeting the members of the Lodge and visiting brethren, together with the Grand Officers,
adjourned to Hamilton’s restaurant,
where tables large enough to seat
two hundred were filled. The banquet was splendid and the party enjoyed it until a late hour. Godd feeling prevailed everywhere, and the
officers were delighted with their reception by the Fraternity in Nevada.
Hypravuic Muves’—The hydraulic
mines near San Juan, Nevada county, are yielding handsome returns,
says the Appeal. The America, one
of the most noted, has yielded to the
owners $2,000,000 since it was opened, and from appearances bids fair
to yield four fold that amount-before
the mine is exhausted. They are
now running a tunnel from the Yuba
river, two miles away, to enable them
to get at the bed rock of the old channel, where it is expected the gravel is
much richer. M'o those who never
saw hydraulic mining as carried on
in these large mines, the working of
such a mine would. be as grand a
sight as Niagara or Yosemite. From
five to fifteen hundred inches of water, sometimes more, rushing through
hose pipes, and directed against the
bank of gravel, tearing it down with
irresistible force, is as strange to the
novice as the natural wonders above
mentioned. The tourists who are
doing this State should visit the deep
gravel or hydraulic mines and see
for themselves what mining life is.
Cement Mriis.—The cement mills
in and around~-French Corral, says
the Marysville Appea/, are spoken of
as very successful. Froma gentleman who passed through there a short
time since, we learn that they work
to charm, and that the owners are
Imaprove Iti!
that such extraordinary inducements
can be offered to the people of Nevada county, as are being made at the
‘present time by Banner Brothers, of’
this city, yet such is the fact,;:and it
behooves all our people,-beth in this
locality as well as in distant parts of
the connty, to take advantage of the
favorable opportunity now presented
to ‘them. In San Francisco. elothing is sold at a very high figure, as
well as in New York, and within the
last month, all woolen goods have advanced from 10 to 20 per cent., owing
to the failure in the -wool clip.’ Yet
in the mountains of California, in
the city of Nevada, where heavy
freights are to be added, everything
in the clothing line is sold at 100 per
cent. cheaper than in the above
places. It does seem unaccountable,
nevertheless it is true, and the cause
of itcan be easily explained. The
well known firm of Banner Bros., on
the corner of Broad and Pine streets,
who have the largest and most beautiful stock of goods ever seen in a
clothing establishment in the State,
are selling off their stock for the
purpose of engaging in business elsewhere, and are offering their clothing
so cheap that it surprises everybody.
Among the goods which will be sold
at extraordinary. bargains, are fine
broadcloth dress suits, beaver suits,
cassimere suits, linen suits, white
duck suits, and every other kind and
quality to be had. They have also a
large assortment of hats, of every
style and description, shirts, gloves,
trunks, valises, boots and shoes.—
Their furnishing department for gentlemen cannotbe excelled anywhere.
Banner Brothers are determined to
close business. in Nevada. city, and
the very low prices at which they are
selling goods, is good evidence that
they mean what they say. During
the past ten years, this firm have enjoyed the good will of all who have
had dealings with them, and their
goods and prices have always given
the best satisfaction. Merchants in
the clothing business at San Juan,
Moore's Fiat, Nuriit Bloomfield, You
Bet, and in fact everywhere. in
the mountains, by calling on Banner
Brothers, will dd much ‘etter by
selecting from their immense stock
than by going to San ‘Francisco for
supplies. Such opportunities to save
money seldom occur, and the people
il to of Nevada county should .not
take advantage of the present one.
