How a Famous English Artist Made Himself Ridiculous. Charles Whymper, the well-known_ engraver and atiimal painter of London, told the following story a few years ago: “I dined at Alderman So-and-So’s last nigh, and as @ mark of honor his eldest daughter was assigned to mo to take down todimner. She's abright girl, but the way she drops her ‘h’s’ is enough to make a man's hair turn gray. But 1 got along very nicely with her and Lady Bletherington on ,tho other side, until the ladies were of the eve of retiring to the drawing-room. The Alderman, had but recently moved out to Highgate; and I wus talkmg about the beautiful scenery near thehouse, the views to be liad from the windows, tue fine air, and so on, when Miss —— suditenly said: ‘I think I get prettier every day, don't yout’ said: ‘I beg your pardon—what did’ you say!’ ‘Isaid I think I get prottier every day.’ There was no mistaking her’ words, so I said: ‘ Yes, indeed, you get prettier, and no wonder in such fresh air and—' But just then she caught her mother's—eye,—and with the other ladies she rose and left the As she went out sho looked back over her shoulder with such a withering scorn in her eyes that I knew I had put my foot in it somehow. Then it: flashed upon me that I had misunderstood her; sho had dropped an h; what sbe had said was not a silly compliment to herself—the scntence really a ‘I think Highgate prettier every day.’”? -Mr. Whymper was never invited ta Alderman So-and-So’s again. Felling Trees by Electricity. Hitherto machines for felling trees have been driven by steam power, but this is sometimes inconvenient, especially in thick woods, and electric power has recently been adopted in the Galician forests. Usually in-such machines the trunk is sawn, but in this case it is drilled. When the wood is of a soft nature the drill has a sweeping motion and cuts into the trunk by means. of cutting edges on its sides. ‘The drill is actuated by an electric motor mounted on a carriage, which is brought up close to the tree and shackled to it. The motor is capable of turning round its vertical axis; and the drill is geared to it in such a manner that it can turn through an arcof acircle and make a sweeping ears Soap Fair white hands.
