vor ? RESI PRESIDENT,
it GRANT .
Trenmaat hi tibloncrs Mba attendthe evening session of the Institute
Me periitendent of Public Instruction. was
: announced we should hear something
new, but in this we were disappointed.
The address was the same one delivered
at the opening of the State Institute,
and recently published throughout the
State. TheSuperintendent must think
that there are few readers in this locality or that the speech is a very extraordinary one and will bear repetition.
_ He took the ground that it. was necessaty in order to secure a good school
system to harmonize all the different
_ opinions and satisfy “all classes of citisens. Hé did -not_explain how those
who held oplaions of spposition to any
ted, nor how those who followed. the
lead of Zack Montgomery could be
rought to support. the publie school
system. In order to harmonize he
would have us blot out the history of
the country during the past ten years.
‘The recent little family misunderstanding must, he says, be forgotten and forgiven. Wecannot allude in the school
‘zoom to the rebels, and when questions
are asked by the children as to the bat. ne read a criticism upon the critic which
_ . contained many witty things, and was} —

South instilled a lofty patriotism into
the minds of children, and the people
of that section been taught that the
Stites were subordinate to the general
gevernment, no rebellion could ever
have been inaugurated in the South.—
_ The rebellion was built upon the ignovance of the true nature of our government, and the masses of the South were
deceived by designing leaders, because
of a lack of* proper education. Would

‘tunnels have been run in of the ledge}
at different points, from’ all of which
good rock has been taken. The lower
tunnel is about 60 feet in length, from
which, two weeks ago, 90 tons of rockwere taken out and crushed at the
Forest Springs mill, yielding $61 per.
ton. In the second tunnel very
ore has also been taken out, which, we
are informed, paid about $46 per ton,
while rock from the upper. tunnel has
paid on an average about $40—the last
crushing consisting ‘of about 200 tons.
A short time ago 275 feet in the Grant
