Tuesday, June 27, 1876.:
: ‘Pe-Day.The Representatives. of the Na@onal Democratic Party meet in St.
Louis to-day, for the purpose of nomimating candidates to ran on the
Presidential ticket. It is generally
conceded that Tilden will go into the
‘Gonivention with the most strength [
of any of the numerous candidates.
He is a. shrewd politician, and has
been laying his wires for a long time.
He has‘a host of outsiders at work
for him, and if they can convince
the Southern wing that he stands
the best chance of success, they will
go-for him in a body. ,They say
they are going for—anything to beat
Hayes ard the Republican Party.
It is just barel¥ possible that the de.
. termination of the Convention may
We a surprise to the party at large,
but Tilden certainly has the inside
track to start with.
at
A Good Mine.
Wemade a hurried visit to Red
~ Dog the other day, and while there
looked over the mining claims of
John Hussey, located on the side of
‘Chalk Bluff Mountain, and being on’
the ancient. river’ channel which is
supposed to extend up towards
Soott’s Flat. .Mr. Hussey is the sole
owner of the mine. He employs only white men on his claims, and has
two shifts of them, so that work
goes on nightand day. There are
four hundred inches of, water used
‘through one monitor, bat the fail is . :
so great that more execution is done
than with double the amount in some
claims we know of. The ground is
at present worked through a bedrook tunnel, but as it is not of a sufficient depth to wash the centre of
the channel to-the bed-rock, another
is being run to strike the lowest . :
point of the channel, so thatall the
ground can be worked through it.
It will be nine hundred feet in length
~ aud will be completed and teady for
working this Fall. This mine isa
valuable piece of property, and: is
owned by a man who deserves success in his enterprise. We purpose
some time soon, to visit the miues of
“that township,.and give full accounts’
Arm Broken. .
© Benjamin Mitchell, who lives near
Auburn, on Thursday last undertook
to ride a colt, which objected to the
arrangement, and bucked him off her
back. Securing her after a small
ehase, he put o blind on her and:
again mounted her. After being on
her back but a short time,.the blind
-, @ame off, and the eolt, eatohing: a
sight of him upon her back, had recourse to her old tactics, whieh she
earried to such perfection as to finally throw Mitchell over her head a
distance of twenty feet. Putting
out his left hand, instinctively, to
aave himself as he fell, the full force
of the fall was received upon that
arm, snapping the bones off near-the
wrist. Dr. Shackleton reduced the
fracture, and Mitchell is doing as
‘well as could be expected.—Placer
