Sheriff Porriny and District Attorney Deal went to Buena Vista slide

Pete and another Indian named Bill,
were at Jack Preston’s beer shanty,
when a white man, whom they called
“old Jim,” whom the’ Indians say
worked at-Leech’smill_some time
ago, came up, and heand Pete had
some words. The Indian had an old
musket-barrel. which he had got repaired in Grass Valley, in his hand,
and with this followed the white ma
some. time, endeavoring to strike
osbime The white man endgavored to
lowed, and as the latter states, were
going to the campoodie of the tribe.
The white man had turned off the
main road to the left, and was -going
across:to the Enterprise mill, when
Pete started after him again, saying
he was going to fight him, and leavyThe
white man said he was sick and did
not want to fight, and started off.
Pete followed him until they got out .
out of sight. Bill says the “white.
man heap scared, just like woman.”
He followed up ina little while, and
met Pete coming back, with a terrible cut in his side, and unother in
his breast. The white man could
not be found, but Jack Preston says
he‘came to-his place the next morning, and told him that Indian Pate
followed him up and clinched with
him, grasping him hy the throat, and
that he was about striking him with
the gun barrel, when he inflitted the
wounds, Preston professes:.not to
know the name of the white man.
“The occurrence at the beer saloon is
corroborated by a boy who was herding cattle in the vicinity. Pete has
a bad reputation among the Indians,
and he shot a squaw at the camp last
Spring. He died ‘at the Hospital on
Wednesday night, andthe body was
burned by his tribe, as we stated yesterday.
The Enterprise Mine. &
The Enterprise Gravel mine is located at Buena Vista Slide; and the
works are very complete, They
havea ten stamp battery. pumping
and hoisting works all in the most
complete order. The ineline is in
three compartments, and is down
fourteen hundred feet. All the way
above the bottom of the incline they
have gravel which prospects well,
but they have not yet. struck the
main channel for which. they are
running. We understand, however,
that the Enterprise has paid expenses all along, and the yield will
no doubt be largely increased when
they reach the main channel, which is
known to,run along under the ridge
‘which they are washing.

The Career of a Great Remedy.
Twenty summers have elapsed since it
was briefly announced that a new vegetable
tonic and alterative, bearing the name of
Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters, had been added
to the list of Preventive and Restorative
médiciies. The modest adv D
which invited attention to the: preparation
stated that it had been used with great success, in private practice, as a cure for dyspepsia, bilious complaints, constipation
and interniittent fevér. It/ was. soon discovered that the article possessed: extraor. class, tested itg merits as a:tonic, stimulant, corrective and restorative, and found
that its effects more than fulfilled their
hopes and. expectations. From that time
to the present its course has 1 upward
and onward, aad it stands to-day at the
head of all medicines of its cjass, American
or imported, in the magnitude of its —
