NILES, of Nevada, ——_—_——— THe BLoop Turrety Party.—The opponents ofthe Union party are ac. eustomed to use the vilest epithets when referring to its motives and its principles. Besides ‘all manner of evil” in the administration of government, it ischarged that this party in its Southern policy is only actuated by a desire to visit vengeance upon the defenceless inhabitants of that section. To read the. Democratic papers in regard to the thatthe parties sent South to enforce the Reconstruction law were savages, entered upon a crusade of murder and rapine. That the enemies of the Un. ion party misrepresent ita principles and grossly belie its practice, is known ly proved. Eyery resolution adoption, and every actof Congress passed by the Union party; have had for their object the establishment.of peace and good government in the land. The reconstruc. tion law now in operation in the South, énd denounced as “most tyrannical,” has saved the lives of hundreds of citizens who were in deadly fear of violence. from the guerrillas and rebels of that section. Under such regulations there is no danger of such scenes as occurred in New Orleans, and this policy which hag done so much to restore order is denounced as tyrannical. “act of tyranny has marked the administration of law i in the South. For the future We must judge by the past of the party and by its creed.— The Union party desires to establish auch a peace in the land that in the fuf ture there may be no cause for ciyil. waf, Everywhere throughout the South it encourages free schools, free speech and a free press. The Union party de_ clares for equal and exact justice to all men, and urges the South to build up manuiactories -and establish industries Which will place that section in a position to which its resources entitle it.— ‘The Union party, in’ short, desires to deliver the South from the thraldrom that a landed and slaveholding aristocracy has reduced it to, and make every man, woman and child in tha late rete el States free. To reorganize. those . goveraments and harmonize them with iaiceempens wo siege which should pre. adopted as it becomes understood im . ed in every part of the Boones. . get the sympathy of the jury. The Not a single Yarye. But the fact that tLe ofeed of the party is s¢ cheerfully accepted and ‘the South, proves that it is the party . for them to have, while by its creed . and its practices alike its accusers are. liars, and only endeavor by vituperation to destroy what they cannot shake by argument. The Union party is the prop of the nation and loyal men will stand by its colors until peace, harmony-and good government are establishCominc.—Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Heine, assisted by other musicians will give a concert in this city next week. Whereever these artists have been their concerts have been largely attended, and the press have giyen them the highest . praise. The Bulletin during their recent engagement in 7 Francisco, said }\ of them: “Mr. Heine is a master of the violin. His style is scrupulously classical. He evokes the most exquisite harmonies from his instrument—now causing it to wail with sorrow, now to thrill with the extasy of joy. The first note revealed the true artist, and took the sympathies of the audience captive. The last piece, more especially, executed on a single string, was a wonderful piece of instrumentation. M. Heine was frequently interrupted by bursts of applause and we believe in every instance encored. Madame Heine is an accomplished pian. ist, and plays with a firmness yet delicacy ‘of touch quite remarkable.” ASSAULT AND BATTERY.—Yesterday afternoon a Chinese assault and battery case was up before Judge Palmer. The face of the prosecuting witness was covered with blood, but as he was not bruised it was thought that. he had smeared himself with beef’s blood to Chinse are a funny people. A} the impromptu ratification meeting’ at Sacramento immediately after the nomination of Mr. Gorham, Governor Low took the stand and said: intimately, and that if. the Union party knew him as well as he knew him, and would take him for twenty-five per cent. of his worth, they would elect him Governor by an overwhelming majority. Oa oO CANNON MANUFACTURED.—An iron cannon was manufactured at one of our foundries, on Wednesday, says the Grass, Valley National, for the citizens of Lake City. It was made out of an old eight inch shaft, the bore being an ‘Inch and a half in diameter and fifteen inches in length. After being bored it was put into a lathe and turned, and then by some means or other beautifully polished. A Mean Rogug.—We never heard of a person stealing a well, but a rogue at Osborn Hill, near Grass . Valley, few nights since “packed off" a hundred and fifty feet of rope, two buckets and a wheel, from a well. That thief would steal a meeting house if he had any where to put it. A_NEW addition to the steamships of the Opposition Line to New York. This enterprising company have purchased the magnificent new steamship Oregon, 8,000 tons burthen, which “will be placed.in. company with the Nevada on the line between, San Franéisco and San _jJuan. This will make the accommodations and capacity of this company equal to any emergency. THE Democratic State Central Committee have nominated James H. Cutter, a merchant of San Francisco, for Harbor Commissioner, to fill the vacancy on their ticket caused by the refusal of Thomas H. THe King of Prussia is 70 years old. A sketch of him, written more than 10 years ago, says: “Should he ascend the throne, Prussia will have a strong gov. . ernment or a revolution.” Nitro GLYCERINE.—Nitro glycerine is cutting the Pacific railroad through the summit of the Sierra Nevadas at the rate of fifty. feet per week, and by mid-summer fifty miles of road will be added to the ninety-four already in operation at the California end. THE richest member -of the Connecticut Senate isan Irishman, whose property is valued at $2,500,000, and whose daily income is $1,000. He made his money from an oil farm in Pennsylvania which he purchased for $2,500. Ir is said that the Hon. S. 8. Marshall, Representative in Congress from the Ninth District of Illinois, is collecting obituaries of himself, called forth by the recent false report of his death.
NuMBER oF PRIsoNERS.—Eight prisoners are now confined in the county jail. Two are awaiting trial under inand one as accessory. The others are held for petty offenses.
