NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA.
LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.
Convurstons.— Yesterday Friz Jacobs, whose parents reside on’ Boulder .
street, fellin convulsions at the-residenco of Mr. ‘Naffzigar-and has since
been in a-critical-condition. He was,
engaged in driving-a cart around town
in the sun and doing such jobs as he’
could get. He went to Naffzigar’s for
the purpose of delivering a package,
and fell upon-the porch in convulsions.
He suffered considerably in his eyes and
head, but revived and started towards T

was taken to the residence of his parents. Dr. Talbot, who attended him,
informs us that -he was easy last eve=
ning, though his: condition was: eritical. His sicknees was caused by eating
large quantities o fruit and then overexertian in the hot sun.
Tuk Fourta at You Bret.—The
citizens of You Bet are going to have a
kind of impromptu celebration of the
Fourth of July. A day-er two ago a
Committee waited on tixécitizens and
in a few hours two hundred and seventy dollars were raised for the purpose
of celebrating. We understand that
every body has taken hold with a will,
and it is proposed to have a pit ni¢and
public dinner. The Little York Union
‘Guard will no doubt be out in force and
_ join in the observance of the day.
AN ENCAMPMENT,—We understand
‘that Colonel N. W. Knowlton will order
“an encampment of the Fifth . Infantry
Regiment, National Guard, at the Glenbrook Park about the 7th of September,
to continue for ten days. “There are
eight companies in the Regiment; four
in Nevada county, three in Placer and
-one in Yuba. There will no doubt be
between four and five hundred men in
camp.
QUARTERLY MEETING.—The Fourth
‘Quarterly meeting of the Methodist
‘ Chareh in this city, wi_] be held on Sunday. Divine services will be had in
the morning at 11 o'clock, and in the
' evening at 8 o'clock. Preaching-by the
Presiding Elder.
Tae Circus 1s Cominc.— Whenever
. you see Alexander come into town you
may be sure that a fine show is not far
in therear. We noticed his smiling
ia’ yesterday,.and upon inquiring
ascertained that a first-rate circus with
all the wonderful performers was+coming. The show will reach this city
about the latter part of next week.
Tae FUNERAL.—The funeral of Orlando Diver, recently killed by falling
from his horse, took place from the ConSregational Church yesterday, The
scholars of the High School, of which
he was a pupil, attended in a body, as
did also the pupils of the Intermediate
School, and a large number of friends
followed his remains to the grave. The
funeral discourse was preached by ReyR. B. Snowden. .
THE ScHOOLs.—''he Public Schools
of this city closed for the term yesterday. No regular examinations were
held but a number of friends visited
theschools, In Mr. McChesney’s department the regular monthly ‘examination was held, and in‘the afternoon of
yesterday compositions were read and
pieces spoken by the pupils.

. HEALING By LAYING on oF HanDs.—
4 The revival of this ancient method of
. cure. encounters much opposition and
contumeély from Doctors of Medicine
j-and Doctors of Divinity ; Leal
strange to say, are particularly bitter
and sarcastic on the matter, apparently
forgetting that the authority of their
own religious creeds rests principally
upon a similar practice by Jesus of Nazareth and his disciples. “But, notwithstanding the skepticism in regard to it,
acts of healing have been performed
latterly which compare, in importance
and magnitude, with any of those recorded of ancient times, cee
. The first extensive practice of this
etiiod on this coast was begun and has
last, opened a public hall in this city,
‘where he treated patients for all kinds
of diseases, free of charge, two hours
each day, during a period of five or six
‘weeks. He also received patients at his
moderate fee, in proportion to their
ability to pay. It is estimated that
eighty out of every hundred were tfeated free of charge. Dr. Bryant performed
upwards of 7,000 operations in-this city
in five months. His sticcess in some
cases was astonishing, and created
great excitement. His raising from a
-bed of sickness the wife of a prominent
lawyer of thiscity, in ten minutes time,
.deserves to be ranked with any of the
so-called miracles of the New Testament. The'lady was bed ridden.
Ancther case was the restoration of a
lawyer of some note from chronic rheumatism in the hands and lower limbs,
which was thoroughly effected in three
manipulations. ‘The gentleman was su
badly afflicted, that his hands were
doubled up into knots, and could not be
straightened out by main strengthAlthough, in some cases, the system
has not been so thoroughly successful as
to be owing to the extreme debility to
which previous treatment has reduced
the patients. :
The public daily press have not dared
in the face of the facts, to dispute the
efficacy of the new method ; yet they
have unfairly ridiculed its practitioners,
and thrown every possible suspicion
upon their integrity and honesty. Dr.
Bryant was recently made the victim of
a malicious prosecution, instigated by
malice and professional jealousy, upon
a baseless charge of malpractice, which
the prosecutor: has since voluntarily
withdrawn ; yet neither the Bulletin,
Alta, Times, nor any other prominent
daily. paper has had the manliness to
state act of its withdrawal, They
hastened to publish the fact of the suit
having been brought, but will not say
@ word now on the subject. We suspect that a few dollars’ worth of adirer*'
tising, judiciously bestowed, would
open their columns very quickly to favorable comments.
_Dr. Bryant is now practicing at Marysville, but intends visiting Oregon
after July ist; He has all the business
he can attend to, in his peculiar sphere,
and is rapidly triumphing over prejudice and persecution by a straighttforward, honest course, neither turning to
the right nor to the left for what may
be said, by the ignorant or the purchasable. His success is a decid gain to
the progress of Spiritualism, as it con-’
firms and maintains a fundamental article of our faith, namely, that spirits
assist mediums in the cure of diseases
by the laying on of hands and by magnetic passess over the locality of the
cure we shall take occasion to enlarge
upon at some future time. M
Dr. Bryant can be found at the Union
Hotel, on Main street, in this city, on
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, June 80th, July ist, 2nd and 3d.
The afflicted are earnestly requested
to give him_a trial, Dr. Bryant can
mention hundreds of cases that he has
cured which were profiounced incurable. aa *
