The Daily Transcript. “NEVADA CITY,. CAL _ "Friday, June 29, 1877. a Protect our Children. The following dispateh i4 printed in the New York “San’’ of dune 15th; Newport, R. I.—John Cleary, a blacksmith, residing on Buannister’s Wharf, last night unmercifully whiped his son George, aged ten years, with a knotted clothes liue, until the boy was cut and bruised all over. After committing this brutal act he commenced upon his wife, who was enceinte, beating ber and then throwing her down stairs bead first. He aged eight years, and whipped him until he wasblack avd blue, and hardly able to stand. The oldest son wastaken to the hospital, where he lies unconscious. The father. was arrested and lodged in juil. Cleary is a desperate.man, and_ bas always abused his’ family, There is DO ‘cause for his brutaltreatment. . The Gold Hill “News” says in New Youk they have a eociety forthe prevention of crvelty to animals. the East, such. societies flourish. Wealthy men contribute of their means; poor men give their might to support these organizations, The horse is an object of comniiseration, the dog an object of pity. Good Mr, Bergh wakes. plaintive appeals in belialf of the brute, and the appeals of good Mr. Bergh are honored as readily asa banker would honor a draft on the Bank of England. . The dumb.animal is treated with the ut“most consideration, To thrash him iga crime, to mangle him. subjects. the offender to 4 fine and sometimes of offenders against the law to_pregood work. He is paving tho way for a higher end nobler civilization in America. to prevent cruelty to children and cruelty to wives? Colonel Ingersoll said in his last lecture that achild was justified in lying to save himself or herself from the inevitable whipping. It wasthe only defense the child had, This may not be moral doctrine according to orthodoxideas, but it is sound common sense nevertheless, A child dreads a whipping as an older person dreads death, It is not the pain alone; it. is the disgracé which in his young mind at-., His spirit Ege inflicted on the mind’ lasis longéxand is more galling ‘than any injury tothe body of man, woudan or child, oN The facts recor patch show to whate ishment 6f children is din-the adove dis’ sesses the puntable to be is a brute, as this father piece have been. Certainly something should be done for the protection of Obildren from the assault of unnat‘ural parents. The law should step in andthrow its arms around these in its beneficent gukrdainship, The futher or mother who beats a little ehild unmercifully, as many parents should be made to feel at the bar of justice, that the child is given thenr to rear, not to maltreat. Let us have a society for the prevention of éruelty to childrev, and then parents will ‘begin to learn that some consideration must be paid to childhood. Weare protecting our brutes, Itis about time that we took sonie steps toward ‘proteeting our children, Sane ane **‘Patent Palpitators.** Under this head the Reno Gazeett gives us burst of wit (?) and proceeds to, slander not only the Nevada .gitls’ but the Truckee girls, Here’s what it says; “Silver City girls are the oldest, Pioche girls are the. ugliest. Susanville girls are the dumpiest. {Truckee girls are the slouchiest. Carson girls are the greasiest. Day: ton girls are the dumbest, Virginia City girls are the boldest. Wadsworth girls are the broadest. Elko girls are the tallest. Franktown Gold Hill girls arethe longest limbed. Genoa girls are the most substantial. The principal place of business will be at the. jower crossing of Deer Creek, in this county. ~ The Pacifie Mutual Life Insurance Company, of California, one of the best in the world, have now under consideratiow the propriety of-establishing a ‘branch office in this city, andit is thought they will do so. -It is proposed to open an office independent of any otber business. We hope they will do it,as it. will most assuredly pay thém, and: be of great convenience to those who desire to’ insure their lives at the’headquartets of the Company. _The young men of this city are making arrangements to have & first. class club room established. If the programme now proposed is carried out,it will be a gay place.~The Nevada County. Narrow Gauge Railroad Company have/miade arrangewents with the North Bloomfield Gravel Mining‘Company, and) the-Milton Mining Company, to" convey all their freight from San Francisco to their mines, by way~of this city. Heretofore most of it has gone by the way of Marysville, and it is a very important item to our railroad and this city. Itis thought that within a féw weekSthe bulk of the freight, for North San -Juaty, this route, and in that*case a great many teams will ran here’ regularly. . Tt'will help business in this place wonderfully when the arrangement goes into effect. J. E, Marshall, A. D. Parks, J. Conroy, R. W. Swain, C. Humphries, J. Stewart, G. Schaffer, A. M.
